We need the application itself. We are on the common app. We need one transcript. We need a letter of recommendation. Just one this can be from a coach, a counselor, a teacher, a youth leader, an employer, and then we need your personal statement. This is the college essays. So that's how this is completing an application. Here's how this is going to work. You are going to be given an actual application that was submitted to CSU, but you're going to be given it in chunks.
So you're going to get a little bit of information each time, and each slide after we present, and you have to make a decision if you're going to accept or deny this student, so it's a good thing. Those chat boxes are working already because you're going to need to chat, and I'm going to ask you after each round to put in the chat. Would you accept, or would you not? And that way we can get a good idea of who feels certain ways. Does that make sense? So it's pretty simple. There's nothing that you need to do except follow along and put those answers.
In the chat. So the first piece of information about this student, you're not getting their name or anything else. All you're going to get first is that transcript. So let's imagine that this is their students transcript. This student had a yearly classes. Some of you may be on quarter system. Some of you may be on semesters. This student is on a year, so I want you to look at this transcript. Look at all the classes, look at all the grades. We don't have. GPA is listed.
But I want you then to tell me in the chat just based off of this transcript. Would you accept or would you deny?
Ethan, if that was an exception you just write, except I'm not sure if that's what you meant.
Alright, OK I'm seeing quite a bit.

Alright, I'm seeing a couple more couple more I know folks take some time to send in those answers, so that's OK. Take your time in the mean time I am going to have more of my frappuccino, and yes, I put it in the freezer, 'cause That's how you're supposed to do it, and I learned that on Tick Tock, but I'm doing it right so as we continue to wait for folks an my frappuccino defrosts we will let it.

And then Kayla so, good question. This is for students right out of high school. So this is for students who would be a first time college student. Good question.
OK, now I'm going to ask for folks to be a little brave here. Who would like to share why if that is why you accepted or why you denied. I want you to write that in the chat why you accepted or why you deny there's not a judgment. I won't share these answers, I'll just say one person said so I won't share out what you said. But I'll say this is some people's thoughts because I think it's important. So one person just said they had a good grade growth throughout high school.
So I'm guessing that they mean that they go up throughout that. OK, interesting other comments. Other comments about why you accepted or denied.
Took challenging classes OK with this person said there was a deny because there are two D's sophomore year. Yep. D in English D in algebra. One good catch.
This person said overall the grades look a little bit low. They're better at the end, but I don't know if that balances it out again. Good, good, good, good observations for sure.
Again, I saw another comment. This person said accepted because they showed a lot of growth, another person. The overall grade show improvement in trust in the student. Yes, I am loving these comments.
So you've got the first part right? So that's the transcript. 'cause this happens just like admissions counselors, right? We can look at your transcript. Now. You're going to look at the test scores now. It's important to note test scores are optional for the fall of 2021, so you do not have to take a test score, right? What I'm doing though is I want you to see if you did have a test score with this transcript, how would that look? So, again, just like the last round, I want you to.

OK interesting nice nice.
Alright, so now we're going to go over it together. So the student took the AC T3 different times. If you don't know the AC T is out of 36, so the first time they ticket 19 second time they took it 21 third and highest score was a 22. Now does this change anything for folks? Does this make you think differently about the student? Some comments that I've heard in the past are, well, you know it's not a Super High AC T score.
But taking it 3 times shows improvement, right? Things like that. That can make a difference. Now I'm not going to ask for feedback on this question. I will in the second or the third round. So this is third round. These are some quick facts about the student, so this is an in state student. They are senior class president. Mom got their associates, father got his bachelors. Their older brother graduated high school but never completed. Community College wants to be a veterinarian.
Played sports all throughout high school. Worked over summers cleaning cars and the student waited until February to submit their application. So unlike the pass around where I'm going to ask you to say, except I don't want you to do that, 'cause you already done it. I want you to write in the chat if and why you think this matters and does it right. So why? Why did we put these up there? Why do we ask for them on an application? So I want you to hear from you about why this little snippet changes things for you. What sticks out?
For you, what makes a difference in your decision and put those answers in the chat like the ones before where it was a little bit more of a feedback. I won't be sharing your name, but I will be reading out your comments, so again, take some time read through this again and think about why this matters and how this changes things for the student.
OK, so one comment is they put it into context of why the person's got the grades they got and perform the way they did. Absolutely good context. Waiting till February to submit is kind of putting it off till last minute. Good catch right when you wait. What does that show?
They show a little bit about the person it can show you a little bit about their character personality. In this case, I think it helps the student interesting.
Person was not qualified for pre vet right? Looking at some of those grades.
Shows they had a good leadership position, but since they waited till February that made me Iffy. Yep, good catch.
The sports show commitment and teamwork senior class president shows leadership skills and team works. It would have been better to do early application though yes.
He shows that he Has leadership. The student seems diligent and appears have a good work ethic. They're not afraid of a lot of work and they have solid achievable goals.
Parents background not necessarily applicable. Good point.
It is important to show how much they participate in extracurricular classes, but waiting last minute does show, so you're starting to think like an admissions counselor right where you can put together, sort of where that student is coming from, but also how things change for us as admissions leaders, right? We're thinking about all of those things because let's go back to the transcript, because now we have a little bit of context of what they were involved in being involved. Students is a great way to show.
That you can manage your time right? It's a way of saying that I can handle multiple responsibilities. However, if you are overextended and not doing well in the class, that can also tip on the other side of well, they're involved in a lot, but they can't really balance their time.
I also want to make a note that when you're filling out these applications, involvement does not just happen at your school if you're involved in school, that's great, right? That's encouraged, but remember, you could also be working a job. Maybe you're babysitting, maybe you're involved in your community or your church. All of that is good involvement. I don't want you to think of involvement just as what you're doing at the school physically, because involvement can be much broader. OK, the last thing that you're going to review.
Is called the academic explanation or for our purposes we're going to use it as the personal statement. This is the students opportunity to tell us a little bit more. So here's what this student wrote.
In 10th Grade I got 2DS but I had a lot going on in my life. I kept fighting with my parents about little things, but they felt like big things in the moment. I didn't know it at the time, but I was struggling with anxiety and depression which made school difficult to focus on. I knew I was capable of better grades and that is why I chose to stay in the IB program. I wanted to challenge myself even though I knew that meant I could end up with a lower GPA. My grades may not be as high, but I'm so glad I stayed in the program.
Because I learned how to overcome obstacles. OK, so just like that last round, I want you to digest that and then I want your thoughts in the chat. What sticks out to you about this? Why does it matter? What context does it give you? Does it change your decision? Does it not? You could answer some, all or none. I just want to hear your thought processes.
Good question or a good comment. Sorry, tough to talk about shows a lot to talk about that and shows that he cares. OK, so a little bit of that vulnerability. He admits defeat and shown that he is grown right, not running away from the mistakes. Yep, I didn't. That person didn't do is great and then move forward.
Interesting, this would change someone's decision to accept interesting if they. If you're that person who just wrote that, tell me why I want to know what changed.
They got to be personal and that they showed that they were able to have grown from that struggle. They were self aware of their grades in 10th grade and explain the issues they had during this time. Yes yes yes.
These are all fantastic comments changes my decision somewhat. He definitely knows he isn't perfect and doesn't deny his flaws, but he still driven to face hardship and overcome another person. What they persevered. And that's an interesting theme that I've seen throughout the comments. Throughout this session, I'm seeing a lot of folks notice trends and growth.
Shows that they were able to take on the challenge of harder classes and didn't quit. It gives a good reason to their grades and make some seem like a better student. It shows they care enough to look deeply at their faults, but I doubt I changed to accept again that person who just wrote that tell me why. I would love to know why you're still in that decision, because again, by doing this participants, you're starting to think like an admissions counselor. These are conversations that we have right when we're not just trying to evaluate the student based off their scores.
So tell me what your thought processes are because I bet you admissions counselors are thinking similarly to you all.
The two D's are hard to shake off, yes, while that person does have a compelling story, those 2DS in core subjects, right? 'cause they were in? Let's review those 2DS were in English and algebra, right? Yeah, they gotta see in guitar, but that's not the same thing as a D in algebra and English.
Another comment was shows their perseverance and their courage going to the IB program. Also, I'm more empathetic to the situation there in so I'd probably accept. And while in IB their grades increase, another thing to look at, right? So as we're here on the transcript, you've got a D in English adyen algebra. But then in 11th grade you've gotta be in IB algebra 2 and a C in English, so things to be thinking about, right?
So this part is my next part is my favorite because it's time for the big reveal I mentioned that this was a real student who applied to CSU and it is. It's me. This is my transcript. Those are my grades. Those are my absolutely stunning photos. I was as cool as I thought I was in high school, but I wanted to let you all know that. So when I applied I did what most students do.
I searched for as many schools as I could and in just threw them all out there so I was accepted to CSU, Michigan State CU Azusa Pacific, but believe it or not, I was rejected from Arizona State Ann Cornell so a little bit of the range there but I went to CSU. I graduated in four years, got my degree in political science and then I got my Masters from CSU as well.
I love sharing my story only because all of the things that you all brought up makes me feel great about myself. No, I'm just kidding. They show what a little bit of perseverance and a little bit of context can do. So students really remember that right? We are an office of admissions. We're not an office of denials. We are looking for reasons to admit you. And the more reasons you give us, the better. So, for example, you may have one or two poor grades.
Like I did, but we're looking at trends. If you can really show us that. Yep, I had a lot going on. I turned it around and moved on up.
Also, you may have an extenuating circumstance. Maybe got Mono, maybe move schools, countries move states or maybe had a family emergency because students remember we don't operate an exist in just our school bubble. Life happens to us and sometimes it's not in ways that we can predict. Yes, we want to work hard, but remember the more context you give in your college essay, the better chance you have at advocating for yourself. And that's what you really need to think about in these applications.
It's U advocating and saying I am a good enough student to be here and do well because that's what we're answering right? When we're admissions counselors, we're asking ourselves, can this student be successful from Day One? And your job is to make that case right? Advocate for yourself OI. Say that to let you all know that. Believe in yourself. Students failure is not the end. It is a step that sometimes we all take. And it's how we bounce back from those that makes the difference.
So get working on those applications. I'm going to hang out here on this web and R, just in case there is any more questions you want to ask. You all have been such an active audience. I have been blown away by the amount of responses by the people tuning in by the questions you asked. So thank you. Thank you so much for your time again. If you have any other questions, put them in the chat. I'm happy to answer them, but other than that, if you're outta here, thank you so much for tuning in and go Rams. You all are so awesome.
And thank you. Thank you. I really do appreciate you all tuning in in your time. You all are awesome.
Thank you Joey. Thank you Ethan. Have a good one, Alison. Take care Teresa. Take care. Hope you all have a great day. Jordan. Have a good one. Troy have a good one.
Hi, I think so much Natalie. Thank you you're welcome. Thank you all. I hope to see those.

Alrai if there's any questions in the meantime, but things that I can answer, let me know. Put those in the chat. I'll be happy to if there's no questions we can go ahead and sign off, but I'm going to give you folks just a couple. Jordan, you have some questions. Throw him in the chat. Let's talk Jordan. Happy to answer any questions that you have.
We're waiting for a question. I'm not just sitting here quietly, although I am.
So Jordan, good question about scholarships. Two that I want you to look up one is CSU Merit Merit scholarships. Look at your GPA in your involvement and you don't have to submit an extra application for them. Once you're admitted, we evaluate those. The next one is the CSU scholarship applications, so the CSUSA. If you Google that were the first thing that pops up the CS. USA is where you're going to find scholarships for students related to your major Jordan. It's OK that you're a transfer student.
Csus essay scholarships are available for all students so absolutely.
Heard that are alright so I got some other questions in the chat. I'm trying to answer just as they come in.

CSUSA application - https://financialaid.colostate.edu/csu-scholarship-application-csusa/
CSU is currently the college I'm the most interested in. Do CSU admissions counselors take an interest in seeing things like that on transcripts? Absolutely, if you are bleeding green and gold and you're coming to be a ramp, tell us. But don't just tell us, tell us why. What about CSU? We are a beautiful campus, but we have great academics. We have great study abroad opportunities. It's a fun community. So yes, you can tell us why CSU. But that really make sure you spell out that why? So that's important.

Alright, another question. I feel like my junior year was showing an upward trend, but since covid it became pass or fail so you can't see my true grade. Does that affect me negatively? No, we are knowing that this is going to be a very different application season and This is why the academic application makes such a difference right? When you can explain in the essay, here's what's going on. We know kovid is happening, but tell us tell us how that impacts you so absolutely.

Scholarships for first-year non-residents - https://financialaid.colostate.edu/scholarships-for-entering-non-resident-freshman/
Alright, next question. Not being able to submit a nap until December January because of current deployment. Thank you for your service. I am currently enrolled into CSU GC and taking a class currently. So to transfer those credits it will not be readily available until the end of this year. Does this complicate? No, it doesn't alley now actually, because remember by applying you're just an indicating your interest. We may still need that transcript to ultimately make a decision, but I would say still submit your transcript because we'll just wait and then get in contact with you if we need anything further.
So to that persons question, I would say apply. Now you're fine.
Any other questions? Again, just want to give some time.
Ooh, What is my favorite thing about CSU? Easy two things. I'll talk about more the social aspect community is really important to me. I felt that when I was there, CSU was a big school, but it doesn't feel like it. Everyone is able to find pockets of community that make the school feel much smaller. So for me it was kind of like I had my circle of friends that I could come back to. But then when I wanted to branch out and meet new people, I always could. So to me it's a big pond.
But it doesn't feel like it. An then. Academically, I loved my classes. I studied political science and I loved being able to have discussions with my peers. I thought my faculty were phenomenal. I just felt really pushed at CSU.
Another good question. Can I turn things in as they become available or tune every turn? Everything at once? Great question, no applying now because we update as you go. So if you apply your application submit that will say OK. David has this transcript in but we're still waiting on this 80 scores in a letter of rec. We do not need your essay T scores. That was just an example. And the good news is we will send you more emails than you probably want. Saying things like hey we still need your transcript. We still need a letter of rec.
So yes, start submitting things now and then. Work on those last final pieces. So another good question.
Any other last questions before we sign off, you will have been phenomenal. These are great questions. I hope there's more, but if there's not, that's cool too. I just like answering questions.
Are there any resources on campus for transfer students? Yes, there are two actually more than just two. One we have an office on campus dedicated entirely to transfer students, so there's that too. Depending on where you're coming from, we have an office called adult learners and veteran services. It is for adults coming back to college and being like OK, what do I need to do? We also have a live on learning community, so an entire floor of just transfer students. So if you do want to live in the residence halls.
And you don't know anybody great everyone on that floor is in the same boat as you because they also transferred there and you should know that almost 1/4 of our population our student body is a transfer student. We have everyone coming in from different places so you will not be alone. Many people just like you. Another good question.
Oh, let me see so someone is visiting anything you could go of when I'm on campus so let me pull something up.
