OK, so moving on to our next slide.
So first I'll define what it is. What I mean when I talk about education abroad.
Drew Doty
10:04:04 AM
It is great to have you all here today!
So our office changed our name from study abroad to education and brought a couple years ago because study abroad wasn't encompassing enough of all the incredible experiences that students were having abroad.
So in addition to study abroad programs, there are opportunities for internships, service learning and conducting research abroad.
You can think of an education abroad as the general term that encompasses all of these activities.
So here at CSU are education abroad coordinators can help advise and support you on any of these opportunities. And as you can see, going abroad is pretty popular but one in five students from CSU.
Still abroad, which is a lot higher than our national average, which we're very proud of.
So there are a variety of academic career and personal benefits involved in an.
In an education abroad experience, excuse me it came prepare you to work in a global world, explained your global mindset. You can gain adaptability, increased self confidence and flexibility. That's a big one and develop new skills to take with you after graduation.
And it can also challenge you to grow in new ways, like communicating in another language or interacting with people from different backgrounds and dealing with ambiguity.
So I'll take some time. You all have shared a little bit about yourselves. Thank you. And if you haven't you can see what others have shared and share something similar. And I'll tell you a little bit about me. And maybe drew will tell you a little bit about himself too as we go. But I studied abroad in Lyon, France and I had been studying French since I was young and so ever since I was little. I always dreamed of studying abroad in France, and you too might have something.
Like that that you've always dreamed of since we were little or you know something that really catches your eye. That emotional component of going abroad is really important to anyway.
Well, I was in Leo. I stated a homestay. I stayed with the French family. I took classes and I also volunteered with a local monster, a preschool, because I worked at a Montessori preschool in the US. So that was really cool to see the difference.
Um, I really learned how French people lived and taught others and saw the world in that short period of time. I also connected with another exchange student who was staying in my home. Stay associate was also staying in our same family. Her name is Sophia and she's from Lundh, Sweden. So not only did I get to learn about French people, I also learned so much about Swedish Swedish culture as well.
And I reflect about a lot of things from my time abroad. But one thing that.
In terms of course work that I think of is my cross cultural management class, so I wasn't international business major with an emphasis in management and so being in a cross cultural management course from an inner with international students was like so. So cool like it was so cool.
Students from all over the world's there who were also studying abroad in Lyon, and I learned so much from that class. I was in groups with people from Mexico, Germany, China like all in our same group working on a group project talking about cross cultural management. I mean it rocks. So that was something that was really cool for me. Maybe you can think of courses that would be cool for you too, but it also I learned a lot from this experience. I gained a lot of maturity.
Clarity and focus for what I wanted to do in my future and in my next steps. And I've also applied what I learned from study abroad to my current job. Now as an education about coordinator. Of course, that's an easy link, but there are lots of other ways that I implement the skills that I learned abroad and for me it was especially big with dealing with ambiguity. I really learned how to do that abroad.
Drew Doty
10:08:48 AM
I was fortunate enough to study abroad 4 times, 3 short term field studies in Israel, Costa Rica, and South Africa, then a semester in Tanzania studying Wildlife Conservation and Political Ecology. I can say without a doubt that those experiences were some of the most transformative experiences I have had in my life, and I know you will feel the same way about your education abroad experience.
OK, but enough about me. I'd love to hear more about you, Andrew.
Anyway, but it's a common myth that education abroad will delay your graduation rate. In fact, a recent CSU study found that those who had an education abroad experience graduated at the same rate, if not quicker than CSU students who do not go abroad.
Alright, moving on to the next slide.
OK, when and where can you go? So Rams study all over the world? We have over 1000 programs in over 80 countries and a cool thing is that we actually have students who have gone to all seven continents. So there is a program in South America or they do an excursion to Antarctica. I knew you were thinking that.
In addition to all the different places students can go abroad, they can go right in all terms. So fall, spring semester, academic year, calendar year, summer break, fall break, winter break and spring break.
Programs can be one week to a full year, and everything in between. So basically we can find a fit for any student keeping in mind their location of interest, an academic focus and budget.
At CSU, the majority of our programs are non English or non English speaking countries and many of those programs offer academic coursework in English. For example, you can study business in Thailand or biology in Spain and all with an English curriculum.
This is our recommended programs list and it is really neat. So nearly every CSU Department or you might be thinking OK. Which programs can I do? And I have the recommended programs list for you, so nearly every CSU Department now has an approved recommended programs abroad list.
We created these lists in partnership with academic department's and this is just a start. This is a short list so it says start but you can be confident that if a program is on the list then there are multiple courses that could fulfill your degree requirements. So this is a really neat tool because with over 1000 programs, if you're just on our website looking through all the programs, that's a lot to sift through so recommended programs is a great place to start your search.
And also, as always, be sure to communicate with your academic advisor about your academic needs.
So on this slide we have the Warner College of Natural Resources and the major ecosystems and sustainability in the warmer Warner College.
But that's just an example. You can find your major in your college on the recommended programs list.
Or you have a high chance of finding it.
So in order to offer CSU students as many education abroad opportunities as possible, we have a variety of program models available. Then I'll go into detail with about. So we have CSU exchange programs, CSU affiliate programs, faculty LED programs.
Those three in each of these programs offers a variety of experiences, so different housing, accommodations, classroom experiences, field work experiences, internship placements, and so on. There's a variety.
To talking in depth about these different program types, it was wondering if anyone had any questions, and if so, if you could please chat them in the box to drew.
Let's move on to our first program model, which is a CSU exchange program.
OK so this is Macquarie University and Drew advises for this program actually because it's in Oceana, which is in his region. So this is a semester program so.
I think we all know where this is, but if you want to take a guess of where Macquarie is located or where it's near, please let us know where is this picture from in the box.
If anyone has any ideas, I'll wait a second.
Connie Han
10:13:48 AM
australia
OK, I'll keep going so this is a semester program.
Bailey Ellis
10:13:55 AM
Sydney
Yes Australia yay. Located on a beautiful 300 acre Parkland campus about 30 minutes North. As Bailey got it of Sydney, Australia, the University has its own dedicated train station for easy access into Sydney and is also within.
Walking distance of a major shopping area, so it's a really great location and Australia is a great location before students to go abroad because they're all English speaking, so you have kind of a full access to their curriculum so they have very strong course offerings for many majors and including stem majors. So drew if there's anything else about Macquarie University that you'd like us to know, please put it in the box, but.
This is an exchange program and what that means is that we send students to Macquarie and Macquarie send sends Australian students to us, and so we kind of flip an instant exchange. This is like a very traditional model of study abroad.
That means that your advisor would be drew here in our office, and when you go you will be supported by the Macquarie University staff.
Drew Doty
10:15:08 AM
You covered it perfectly!
So kind of flip and then their students will be supported by us in the education abroad office. Kind of exchange. Will learn how this is similar and different to our other programs.
And I wanted to move on to another program, isa in Prague, Czech Republic. So this is what our office calls an affiliate program. So we talked about exchange. Now we're talking about affiliates, So what does affiliate mean and how is it different?
So affiliates are organizations that send students abroad. This means that there is an organization that helps students go abroad. In this case, isa, and they offer support with everything like registering for classes, helping out with visas if needed, putting together travel excursions. Once you're there, doing tours of the city, etc. So often times, this means that students are grouped in cohorts with other students from other universities that are also studying abroad.
So they offer the support as you're applying, and then once you get there, there's usually.
A site on site person there to help with all of those needs that you have.
So Isa Prague, Czech Republic.
So this is a semester or summer program in Prague and students really like to study abroad with isa because of all this excursions and onsite support they provide. So a difference from the exchanges that in an exchange the host University is helping the students. And there's also a limited number of exchanges and there are a lot of examples of affiliate programs 'cause their organizations that are. That's what they do is they? They help students go abroad.
Those are kind of two different models.
So in this case at Isa Prog student study at Charles University, which is one of the oldest University in universities in Europe, and this is a great program for liberal arts majors or students in the College of liberal arts.
Um and even though prog is checked, speaking they speak the Czech language. Students can still are still able to take their course work in English, and they're able to get around Prague using English because it's such a big city that attracts a lot of tourists. So if you wanted to go to prog, I do recommend that you learn some conversational check to help you get around, but you could also get around using English as well.
Alright, we talked about exchange programs. Affiliate programs are last program type.
Is a self help programs and what do we mean by this?
This is staff and faculty LED programs, so these are programs led by a CSU staff or faculty member and they travel abroad with a group of CSU students.
So this could this is different from the other programs we talked about because this could look like a faculty member teaching anywhere from 10 to up to 25 students. So this is a really small group and you take one or two courses abroad primarily. And there are other examples where that's a little different.
And you travel with your group to either to that location or to a variety of locations.
So while you study abroad, you can imply or enhance your learning there in various ways. So for example, some programs have a lot of field work, some have a lot of tours, etc. But CSU Professor teaching a CSU course or courses and traveling with a group.
So pictured here on your screen is a picture of the CSU Center in Toto Santos, Mexico, which is located in Baja California.
So total Santos has fascinating biology and marine life because in Baja California it's has access to there's a lot of water around there at the ocean and the culture is also beautifully unique, so it's different from US culture obviously, and how they see the world and themselves, but it's also distinct from the mainland Mexico culture, so this is a really fascinating place to be and students really enjoyed their time in Toto Santos.
We have several programs that happen at the center. We have the fish, wildlife and Conservation Biology, which is a semester program in Toto Santos. We have liberal arts and community so that one would be more working, looking and working with the biology of the area.
There's a liberal arts and community engagement program in Toto Santos, which is engaging with the local community and learning from them.
There's Oceanography in Toto Santos and sustainable travel. An alternative ternative tourism. So in one place there's there's different programs that you can do.
So depending on the length of the program, there is a semester program, but the other programs are more one to two week programs in this summer or fall break or spring break. But depending on the length of time this can't. This program can range from a week abroad to a semester.
So and again we have program semester, winter break, fall break, spring break.
I talked a lot about our CSU Toto Santos Center but we have staff and faculty LED programs happening all over the globe beyond Toto Santos. So I want to bring up another example. I work with a faculty LED program called Shakespeare in Oxford so students can study Shakespeare and his work while living in Oxford and they also get the opportunity to take a tutorial of their choice with an Oxford Professor. So at the end of this, they're actually getting an Oxford transcript.
Which is really cool so they can study in Oxford in the library where, like some of the Harry Potter scenes were filmed and they can get credits studying Shakespeare, which could be for their major or elective credits like there are all kinds of different faculty LED programs that we have available. So just as a thought to keep in mind, and before I move on, does anyone have any questions?
If you're thinking or while you're thinking, I'll say to that staff and faculty. LED programs can really help. If you're a transfer student or newer to CSU, or just want to get more involved in CSU. Students often find that the community that they build, both with other CSU students and the CSU professors, really helps them when they come back to CSU because they have they know these people. They have this built in network and kind of gets them more.
Involved in like a part of what it means to be a CSU ram and not only that, but you get an exceptional relationship like a one on one relationship with the professor who you can learn a lot from that. That's also can be helpful when you need like recommend letters of recommendation or things like that. So it's also relationship building is a probe. These type of programs as well.
OK, only von to choosing your program.
So I've given you a lot of options, lots to think about of what you are interested in. So as you consider your program, there are lots of things to think about, including costs, academic fit and your personal goals. So all of these are important and we would like to help you find the program that best fits your unique needs and interests. So ideally in the middle the most orange part of a Venn diagram.
That's where you would find your perfect program or the program that matches best with you.
Also say here that sometimes students ask me what's the best program to study abroad and there is no best program like I could tell you the cheapest one of the cheaper programs. But maybe it doesn't fit in your major. Or I could tell you the most expensive programs that has have all of these.
How some field excursions and benefits? But maybe it doesn't fit your budget or a really cool program that doesn't fit your academic needs. It's kind of finding the right match for you.
OK, so when I think about how I make decisions in my life, one of the first considerations for me is cost. So it's important to think about the budget at the beginning and during the planning process of education abroad.
So this table here shows the ranges in cost of attendance and the value of researching program prices as you make your decision. So studying abroad doesn't always cost more than staying on the CSU campus, especially for out of state students. In fact, oftentimes it costs less, but sometimes it does cost more and it just depends on the program.
So be sure to compare your budget for the total cost of attendance.
So that includes tuition, books, housing meals, airfare, visas, immunizations, insurance and personal spending money.
So for example, if you see a program costs that only has tuition and housing but doesn't account for your other expenses, and you see another budget that has all of those things accounted for, make sure you're comparing to like budgets.
So for Colorado resident, the estimated cost of attendance for one semester at CSU is about $14,000, and you can see that in the highlighted bar there on our slide that many education abroad programs are priced in that 12 to 1600 thousand dollar price range.
Credits so one of the big questions that we get asked is how do credits work? How do they transfer?
So this question depends on the type of program you go on, but we're here to help you work through the process.
So there are two steps when you are ensuring that your credits will work for your degree.
So if you're going on a program, they're going to have credits transferred, so this wouldn't be a staff or faculty LED programs, because those are CSU credits. But if you're going to another institution and you're having those credits transferred.
You will first need to have the coursework you plan on taking, reviewed by the registrar's office. They will determine how many credits each course is work and if it will be for upper or lower division credits.
And then Secondly, your academic Department will determine how the coursework will fulfill, fulfill your degree requirements.
So with these approvals you will know if these credits will keep you on track for graduation in a timely manner. Don't worry, we have a system in a process for this. You can't study abroad without doing this, you just take it step by step. But I just wanted to let you know that this process is in place for how credits will transfer.
So once you decide on your program, your education abroad advisor will advise you on the next steps and help you through that process.
Still talking about education abroad coordinator? Who will you work with? Who will you talk to in order to make these choices?
There are several other professionals who will advise you as you prepare for education abroad experience, so we're all working together as a unit to make sure your questions and needs are addressed.
and working together with your academic advisor is key. So you see here you have your CSU education abroad coordinator. You have your academic advisor and you have your program advisor.
And something that we that's not on this slide but is equally isn't as important as your support network at home. So whoever that means to you, the important people in your life that can help you make these decisions.
Another person that will work with is Cindy Miras in financial aid, so one of the next steps for education abroad is making your budget.
And we are so lucky to have a dedicated person in financial aid for education abroad. We encourage everyone to go and talk to Cindy. She's pictured here and she can look at your current financial aid grants, loans, scholarships and give you an idea about how.
For how that money will go abroad with you, the good news is, is that 99% of your CSU aid grants loans will go abroad with you, and Cindy can give you more details on that.
And it's a good idea to talk to a financial aid advisor like Cindy before you commit to your program so that they can help figure out if it's a good fit for your budget or not. So I listed her email address here, but there's also an information video that you can watch and it's linked to these slides, but it's also available on our website.
The best advice when applying for scholarships is to know the deadlines. So I've listed them here. Scholarships will rarely fulfill fullers. Describe scholarships will rarely fully fund your academic program, but they can close some gaps between your current financial aid. What you need to go abroad, so be sure to attend one of the scholarship and fund raising workshops to find and obtain more funds and drew maybe you could share a link to our scholarship opportunities page.
And any information about workshops that we have that would be helpful so that if students are interested in scholarships right now, they can explore.

So I want to make a note of the program coordinators that I've mentioned today, so drew Doughty here with us, advises for Oceana is the first one listed. What a great picture. Love you that is true. So if when I talked about Macquarie University if that caught your eye, drew is who you would make an appointment with. I advised for Central Northern and Eastern Europe. If the isa prog program sounded interesting to you and Nicole Pawlowski.
The third one from the top is the program coordinator for totals programs. Going to Toto Santos.
The rest of our program coordinators have their own regions and would be happy for you to make an appointment with them, but those are the programs that we mentioned today.
A lot of the process of planning to go abroad is asking yourself what your goals are to go abroad. Kind of holding up a mirror, and as I say and we're here to help. So if you haven't decided where you'd like to go abroad yet, you can make a general advising appointment with us.
Or you can pick a place to start and go from there. You can always change your mind, but if you already know where you'd like to go abroad, or what program type you'd like to do.
You can also ask yourself how long you'd like to be abroad, or maybe that's a conversation that you have with your academic advisor. But all of these questions that you'll ask yourself and learn more about yourself front. You'll figure out along the way with this process, and it will also help determine who your program coordinator will be.
I think I know your next thoughts. Well. How do I make an appointment with them with education abroad coordinator? How do I learn more?
Sakari Eason
10:33:07 AM
curious will these slides be made available?
So this is the I covered the basics of.
Of getting started, and here are some next steps. So if you're ready to schedule an appointment with the CSU coordinator, just look at the contact education abroad.
Page under the about section of our website and you can click on getting started.
Sorry, you can go under the about section of our website. Enter contact education abroad to make an appointment. You will be making an appointment through navigate so you can go that route or you can also get to navigate from canvas and make an appointment starting where an international programs and then education abroad advising.
And you can pick general advising if you're interested and want to learn more and or you can pick our region if you already have a program that you're interested in.
And we have an education abroad 101 video on our website on the getting started page drew would you mind linking the getting started page here as well so that students if there interested can watch the education abroad 101 video?
And there's also a financial information, financial aid, informational videos went there as well.

Anne Anne the education abroad. One on one video was made by Pure Advisors in our office. So if you're interested in talking to a student who has been abroad before, you can email educationabroadacolostate.edu to talk to appear who has been abroad before and they can talk to you about their program. Just the process, the peers in our office. Brennan is an engineering major and he studied abroad in Swansea University.
Angel is a communications major and he studied abroad with semester at sea. So if you're interested in semester, it's the Angel would love to connect with you because he had a really great experience with semester at sea. All they all had a great experience and Karen went on a social work program in Costa Rica. Faculty and staff lead program. So if you're interested in faculty and staff load programs and and how they work and what it's like, Karen is a great resource for you.
Just if you're getting started.
Before you make an appointment with the coordinator.
OK, so those are next steps follows on Instagram if you would like.
OK, and now I'm going to leave our last page 2 questions.
And if anyone has any questions that they haven't already had answered.
There's a question on when the slides will be made available.
Maybe drew has the answer to that question, I'm not sure, but all of this information can be found on our website and also if you are interested more in study abroad, just making a point and general advising appointment with us or send us an email here and we can definitely send you this slides if it's helpful or talk to you more one on one about your goals for education abroad.

I believe that you should receive an email follow up with the recording of todays session.
Oh, Andrew says you should receive a email.
With the recording of today's session, that's a neat.
But I'm wondering if there are any questions I wanted to.
Cover what things look like in our office with kovid right now, so currently are off if you're planning for an experience a year or two years in the future, this won't. I hope it won't apply to you, but if you're thinking about, like for example next fall, or some, or.
This summer and wanted to let you know a little bit about how our office office makes those decisions around Kovid.
The International Travel Oversight Committee, which we call I talk, involves leaders from all over all across Csus campus.
His monitoring the situation.
Excuse me in there currently looking at programs with the departure of two to four months out to make the best, so two to four months before departure that are making the decisions the best decision for the health and safety of students before their go. So for fall for summer and fall 2021 programs this would mean CSU would start making more final decisions about those programs after February 15th of 2021.
And if you're looking at programs during those time during this summer or fall, we ask that you be aware of the program and the financial timelines and responsibilities, and just know that education abroad right now just will look a little bit different than it has in the past due to our.
The COVID-19 in the change in our world, so please reach out to us. You can talk to a coordinator. You can talk to our risk manager if you have any questions about this summer or fall programs.
I'll leave it here for just a little bit longer to see if there's any more questions that come up.
Audrey Pallai
