Hello from Hawaii!!
Awesome, so to give you all sort of an overview. We have some content information that we're going to go over now because both of us are presenting, it's likely we won't be able to answer the questions in the chat box in real time. And that's OK. Hello, I see someone posted in the chat. Hello from Hawaii. Awesome welcome. If folks do want to post where they're from, that's always welcome. Were able to do that now again, as you post questions in the chat. Because we're presenting, we're not going to be able to respond in live time, but at the end we will be able to help you.

Hi from Tucson!
Also, everyone is on the Internet right now, so it's possible that for some reason I may get disconnected. If that happens, don't worry, I'll just quickly log out and then log back in. So Oh my gosh hello from New Jersey and hello from Alaska, another person from Hawaii, a person from 2 San wow. This is cool. This is cool alright. Well like I said my name is David Phiri and we wanted to provide our contact information here on that first slide that you see just to give you some information about where we're coming from. An if you wanted to.
Reach out, you can always find me on Google. I am literally the first Google search. If you ever just say David Ferrie, I'm the first one to pop up John. It sounds like they can contact you with questions as well.
Wonderful, wonderful. So we're first going to start with sort of an overview, and this is really important just so we can make sure we're all on the same page. So this slide majors and minors in concentrations. Oh my, the marketing team let me put in that really bad joke and I'm glad they kept it. Now, one of the things that we talk about is we want to make sure you have a clear understanding of what those three things mean, but remember, this is absolutely on a CSU context. So, for example, a major here at CSU. That is what you're going to be getting your bachelors degree.
In now, most majors here at CSU come with the completion of about 120 credits. On average. A minor is a subject area that you may want to learn a little bit about, but you don't necessarily get a degree in it and people could pursue that for a variety of reasons. Maybe there is a subject area that we don't offer a degree in, such as American Sign Language, which we just started. Or maybe there's another minor that you're like that would be really cool, but I don't have full time to make sure I can grab that. A minor that I love talking about.
Is business administration. I just think you can really use that with a variety of fields and then the last pieces of concentration, and I'll use my own major as an example. So I went to CSU. I graduated in 2013 and my major was political science, but my concentration that was my focused areas 'cause there are some majors that are very broad political science, is a great example of that. So I focused on law and local and public policy. That's what a concentration means.
There are some majors here at CSU like psychology that have four concentrations at the same time. There are also some majors that are already so specific. They don't have a concentration. I like to use mechanical engineering as an example, right? So CSU has 74 academic majors here at CSU with 100 hundred minors and in total we have 250 programs of study. So students. How you do this is you apply with one major.
As you're filling out your application to say Yep, I want to be political science. If that's your major, we should be friends, but that's how you would enter. There are those some students who want to add another major. We call that double majoring double majoring is possible at CSU. The only thing I want to make sure you know is that you can't add a double major until you actually are on campus in enrolling. And that's the same thing with a minor and you can also triple major. That's right, we've even had a student triple major here at CS go.
All right, thanks David so.
There are majors that do come with specific GPA requirements and what that means is they are called what we call our competitive majors, a business major or sorry is a competitive major. For example, while John takes over these next few slides, I'm going to go ahead and post in the chat where you can find information about our competitive majors. So John take it away.

Uh, this isn't a quiz that's actually going to be graded, but several things I'm going to talk about today involves some self reflection on your part, so I want to start by saying the process of choosing a major and it really is a process. It means thinking about a variety of things. It means thinking about your natural interests, thinking about your skills and strengths and motivations, along with goals and what's really important to you. And of course, a major can be a pathway to a future career.
So, uhm, given that, deciding on a major is more of like a process that can take time and often times this is a difficult decision, we want you to know that there is help along the way, so you probably already experienced help at High School in college an at CSU, and at most colleges there are advisers and other resources that are available to help you.
This can be in person or through online resources. So um, in our short time today I want to get started by saying that there is no way that we expect you to attend this webinar and make a decision right now. If you haven't given this topic some some reflections, so just so you know this. Like I said, it's a process, didn't does not usually happen really quickly. So that said, some of you may already have decided on a major somebody. Some of you may have some pretty good ideas about what you would like to choose.
David Ferree
04:07:19 PM
This webinar will be recorded! In case you miss something or if you cannot watch the entire thing
And some of you may be have not even really thought about it or are kind of in no man's land. Don't know, don't really have any ideas right now, so that's all OK. Uhm, but to start out the process, I want you to think about a couple of questions and I'm going to talk about them. I'm not going to give you too much time, so you might want to write these down or make note mentally of what they are, because like I said, These are really great places to get you started thinking. So the first one, what subjects are activities.
Fascinate you and seem to absorb you. So typically I would say think of things that you do everyday. Naturally this could be. This could be an academic subject or it could be non academic. For instance maybe you like to watch certain types of TV shows. You go to certain websites, maybe you, maybe you're really interested in the news or weather as some really brought examples, but try to notice just what seems very natural to you. What do you do? You naturally gravitate towards?
A second question would be what would you study or do with your time if the only thing that matters to you is that you enjoy it. So what would you choose to do if you knew you wouldn't fail? Uhm, so I know that we all have limitations, right? That affect what we study. In effect, what we choose is Akarere excuse me time, money, other peoples opinions are also involved. Our own straight strengths and weaknesses, fear of failure. So this question really tries to get at.
Let's just pretend you knew it. You would be successful and you could do anything and you could make however much money you need to make it doing it. What would those things be? What would you spend your time doing? Um, I really love these questions. I think they're great to Daydream about and I will tell you I still think about questions like this. I think that maybe none of us really stop thinking about some of these questions were always thinking about what really what I really like to do with my time. So again, make notes.
Even right now or after we're done today, think about these questions and write down your answers, because these can be great clues to majors.
That you could choose an also their careers or I'm sorry. Also they're clues to future careers.
But we're going to do a little quiz here. Just two short questions. So true or false. and I know you can't respond, so can't respond to us anyway. True or false? My choice of major will determine what career I pursue for the rest of our live my life.
Alright, well this is obviously pretty false, um.
80% of people actually change their major at least once and the latest data is that only 27% of people actually work in Akarere that's related to their college major, so no one is employed as an English major. No one is employed as a business major. Yes, several majors are directly directly related to particular careers. David earlier mentioned engineering. That's one. That's that's a field that's related. Some others might be nursing and.
A lot of science careers you probably do need to study those fields in order to be employed in those fields, but and positively many degrees don't point to specific career paths. Instead, they give you a set of skills that help you navigate the job world. Another words, they're useful in almost any karere, and I believe David is going to kind of reinforce my point in a little bit, OK.
2nd question to Ponder and think about today, true or false. first I should find out what my passion is. Then I can follow it.
So if you haven't guessed by now, these are both false. Um, we really don't like to use the word passion. That is kind of a loaded word. That may not mean something to all of us, and for others it does. But a good way to kind of re frame this is to think about gaining experiences, trying new things, new experiences, and maybe even experiencing more of things that you already like. So by experience, this really gives you a chance to test out, try new things, reinforce what you already know you like.

Often times this is the way people truly find a passion or what their highly motivated by is really just through good old trial and error. So try to seek ways to get involved. This may look a little different right now with the coded situation, but you could still try a new class or an elective. Ask a family member or friend about a job that they do that you're curious about. Be curious. Join a student club if there's a version available online or or if we're back on campus.

All right, so we're going to take a look at some people I'm acquainted with and I believe I originally set this up in PowerPoint so you wouldn't be able to see their college major right away, but I do believe in this case you can see what their major is. I was going to try to have you guess. Uhm still, alright, so I want to talk about my friend Jason. He's chief executive officer of Ducati of North America that is a motorcycle company that's based in Italy. So Jason started out actually in Fort Collins, working at.

The parts counter in a motorcycle shop. He's always love cars and motorcycles. He wanted he figured if I'm going to work part time somewhere during college, what would I do? I'm going to work at a motorcycle shop, so Jason actually was majoring in journalism. He worked his way up through this company in various iterations and I would say it's through a combination of perseverance and Will and just general interest in this industry that he was able to essentially do things that.

Hi from Portland Oregon!
Maybe a typically a business major would do so, he now runs this company in the United States. I think that's quite amazing to consider he studied journalism in college and runs a motorcycle company. I definitely speaks to his speech speaks to his true interests. So Laura Hall and marketed marketed marketing executive was Shipley. This is a British company that is in the shipping industry, she actually studied music and graduated with a music degree.
And I think she would say that the reason that she was able to transition from music to being a business executive is that important skills that she learned as a music major would be. Let's see creativity working under pressure, performing in front of an audience.
Teamwork, researching and promotion. All of these things are very big parts of marketing careers, so you don't really need to know what marketing is all about. If you don't right now, I just want you to see that a lot of the skills that she developed and put together a studying music ended up applying in marketing, and I do know she actually kind of fell into this job by accident into the marketing field. She was just looking for a position after she graduated outside of music.
An marketing happened to be the first thing she saw and she was able to get hired and rise up so this side slide concludes with a quote again that speaks to what David's going to talk about. So really, as long as you think learning how to think, speak and write and you have a good work ethic, typically you can find your way too rewarding karere.
Awesome and I love that I love that last quote too, especially because I think there is some things that we are going to talk about. So I think after those couple of slides, maybe some students are wondering. OK, so like what major should I choose that so and this is hard only because it really is so up to the student. The Career Center does have a great resource so John can I share that my majors quiz?
David Ferree
04:15:29 PM
https://csu.mymajors.com/quiz/
Alright, so I just put that in the chat and that's a way that sort of assesses your profile and it sort of talks and ask questions like what do you like to do? Do you like to work with people? Do you like despite do you like to speak in front of others? I actually take this. I did it when I first became an admissions counselor and it recommended my actual undergrad that I actually studied in, so it's pretty accurate. It's pretty cool.
We get this question a lot when we are traveling or interacting with students of about your pre majors, right? I want to go into law. I want to go into Medison. Do you have pre Med or at CSU a question we get a lot of pre vet right and we don't have any pre law or pre Med majors. What we do is we have tracks right because we have a belief that we want students to be able to find a karere with those undergraduate bachelors degrees. We don't give you a degree just so you can go and get more schooling.
Right, and if that's your path, that's awesome. But for example, if one of your majors was environmental public health here at CSU right, you may want to eventually go and go into occupational therapy. But I know folks in that major who may want to work for the public health at their local community or their state and federal level. So what we encourage students to do to think about if you're in pre Med or pre law is to find undergraduate major that is interesting to you. Or maybe think about what within Medison?
Want to do if you want to study Infectious Diseases? Microbiology is going to be crucial, right? If you want to be a physical therapist, we have health and exercise science now. If you want to do pre law, a great one is political science. But I have a good friend who graduated from du law school and her major at CSU was anthropology. Right now there is a great resource for any pre health interested students and it's called pre health advising. Now how advisors work at CSU is you're given an academic advisor.
Or your major and my academic advisor. Her goal was to make sure that I was meeting the requirements to graduate to make sure I was on the right track. A pre health advisor is somewhat similar, but rather than focusing on degree completion, focuses more on goal attainment. So our pre health advising office can help you think about. OK, if you want to be a vet, where are you going to shadow hours and what kind of veterinarian do you need to be and how are you thinking about planning for your entrance exams now are pre health advising office though at CSU.
You have to initiate that reach out to right. You gotta set up the contact. We also know 'cause I know this 'cause I can hear my dad's voice when I'm talking about it of well I want to find a job after graduation, right? Well, what are you going to do with a degree in College of liberal arts? Or I hear those things all the time and I don't mimic them as a way to mock because it comes from a real place of concern. Because of these questions listed below, I want to pay off student loans. I want to be able to provide to my family. I want to have a career that I love.
But I also maybe wanna job that pays well that is so OK to be thinking about and not only have we thinking about are we thinking about it? We're doing it. But let's back up now. There is an organization that are Career Center partners within is the National Association of colleges and employers and John. I know this is your expertise, so feel free to chime in if I mess up. But they do a survey every year about what core competencies are you looking for from an employee? What skills do they need to bring?
And they rated 1 to 5, one being not essential, an 5 being absolutely essential and you can see on the slide one of the first things it's critical thinking. How do you face a problem and how do you solve that problem? What skills and resources do you use? Teamwork is the second one. I think that's so important to be thinking about, right? How do you work with others to achieve a common goal? Now here at the Career Center, they've expanded quite a bit and I'll tell you how they did in a little bit.
So, and I'm only going to scratch the surface, so one that I really like, so you'll notice I'm going to flip back and forth the number #5 digital technology, whereas at CSU we think of more of digital proficiency, not just you know how to use Twitter or Instagram, but how do businesses use that to be efficient and to promote right teamwork? Remember, teamwork's number 2 at CSU? It's not just teamwork, but how do you work with others who may be different from you, right? Right, inclusive, teamwork. That's what I mean when you're able to.
Work with a diverse set of individuals to still work towards a common goal. Those are big things and John I'm not sure if you wanted to add in anything. 'cause How do I do with that? They do get.
Yeah, you did Great, Um I would just like to add that, uhm, you know. Oftentimes, it's not like uh, in your in your coursework, in your classes that an instructor is going to be telling you, telling you that he is or he or she or they are teaching these things. It's more of like I think, a good way to look at that is your own awareness. Do you sense opportunities to increase your abilities in these areas? So, for instance, I mean David talked about.
Digital proficiency, think about leadership and teamwork. Can you recognize opportunities to take the lead? Maybe in a group project? I mean, that's teamwork and leadership. On college campuses, there often are many programs that are set up to help you develop leadership. So in many ways, as it stands right now, it's good for you to feel like you are owning up and being responsible in trying to help develop these competencies for yourself.
Uh, I would say right now. Don't necessarily think that an instructor would be aware of of all of these things. So my point is, take some agency own part of this for yourself and recognizing what these are, these competencies are in be be purposeful about trying to develop them during your time in college. You can even do it in high school, but definitely in college.
James Palmer
04:21:56 PM
Hi from Georgia!
I love that and I think that really ties in well to our final point. Really, it's not what you major in, it's what you do with that major. And this last point is one of the reasons I loved CSU because I feel that we have what we call 360 degrees of development for students. What that means is that when you're in the classroom, then you're working with faculty and you may do a group project, right? That's development. But also there are opportunities throughout campus that do the same thing.
For example, right in our office, we hire what we call student and missions ambassadors. These are the students who lead you on tour and share their experiences, and while they are doing an important service to this University, they are also being developed. We're giving them opportunities to work on their public speaking skills to how, because in admissions we often have to make decisions on the fly. Our ambassadors are also getting that training of how to be flexible, right? Or when they're working on a large event, what goes into large event planning?
I like that experience students because I think working on campus is such a great way to also develop those skills. It's not one or the other right, it's both. Both of these things. The classroom experience. A staff in our resources. We work to give those competences and develop them in you as a student and that's one of the things that I really loved about CSU. 'cause it didn't matter who I was talking to, any staff member or faculty member, I felt that they were working to better me and I love that. and I love that about the collegiate environment.
No, we really hope that this was beneficial to you. There's a couple more questions in the chat that I know we're going to get to an I want to make sure so if you could start asking those questions. If you do have any. Oh, I'm seeing that some folks can't hear me. Can other folks hear me? If you can also just post John, can you hear me?
Sydney Barber
04:23:32 PM
Hey from Colorado
Kelsey Stamm
04:23:48 PM
recommend they head into a chrome browser if they aren't already!
OK cool, not sure, maybe some folks are having a little bit of trouble. OK, I'm here in folks can hear me. OK, so here's what I want to do. I'm going to go back 'cause there were some questions at the beginning that we didn't get a chance to. So I just want to make sure. And John if you have answers to any of them, feel free to chime in. So the first question started at the beginning from Landon. Are we recording this video yet? We are an it will be emailed out to everybody. Can you double concentrate? This one is going to be very specific to the major you're looking at.
Right, I think specifically the one that comes to mind is business. So instead of me guessing and potentially give me wrong information, go to their website, reach out to them, they want to chat with you and ask questions like that.
I know you said CSU offers double majoring, but there isn't. Is there an option to do a dual major? That's a really good question because it depends on the major. The one I would encourage you to look at that I know for sure is Electrical Engineering. They have a couple of dual major options that you're interested in.
When do you need to have a major chosen? We encourage students to have a major chosen by 60 credits. Most students get that by their sophomore year. I also get questions all the time of how long does it take me to get X degree right? How long is it a four year programs A5 year? and I think that's tough to answer because it depends on you as the student. So if your major was 120 credits to get that degree right, if you broke that down by 8 semesters, that's 15 credits. If I was doing my math right.
Right, so that's 15, so you could take 18 credits a semester to go up, but not enough students are taking advantage of our summer option, right? We're not just open fall in spring classes are taken in the summer, and so if that's a thing to think about right of, how can I make sure I'm getting these through?
Alright, where I can find the web and R specifically? That's a good question. So because you registered for this webinar, it will be emailed to you. I believe if for some reason you don't get the web and our email to you that's recorded reach out to your admissions counselor and they're going to be able to help you navigate that you can find your admissions counselor if you go on our admissionscolostate.edu.
Another question, what should I expect with the major zoology? I have some thoughts, John, do you have thoughts about that one?
Uhm, no, I'll let you take out one.
Wonderful zoology I think is a really unique major. I think some students pick that, 'cause if they're thinking Privett there like OK zoology. But remember zoology is also thinking about what is the overall uptake of a zoo right? What does it mean to be a zoologist or you want to focusing on more education and conservation efforts? Or do you want it to be more on the medical side? It's going to be up to your track.

What should I expect with the major Zoology
John, you got it or you want me to do it.
Um, why can try but I may get it wrong? UM, I I I don't know about this specific class, but oftentimes I believe you can take intro courses even when you're undeclared. Again, I can't be. I definitely don't know about this class, but I do know that there are many intro classes that you can take, yes.
Absolutely, and I think this is one of the things about coming in as undeclared. 'cause I came in as undeclared actually. And when I came in undeclared, I was assigned an undeclared academic advisor that was really cool for me because they asked me questions. David, you really like Psych 100? Do you know you can do these 30 careers with a degree in psychology? So I think sometimes it's assumed that undeclared students are going to be just sort of like left alone and hope you do well.
That's not true. There's very intentional reach out from the University for students who are undeclared, and that, to me, is really, really important.
So an undeclared the undeclared advising offices excellence, their staff is excellent, so they're really supportive.

If we intend to add majors, what major would you suggest we apply for first and which should we add?
Awesome if we intend to add majors, what should we suggest to apply for 1st and which should we add? It depends. It depends on what you want to do I think to me where I think about what major should I add first if I want to add a double major I would look and reach out to the college first to reach out to those in the staff member. Depending on the major you're looking for and talk with them and ask like hey, I'm thinking of adding this major. What does that look like?
The good news is is this is where your academic advisor is going to be instrumental to help you to say, OK, I'm studying dance and I want to add an anthropology. Those are the first thing that came to mind. How can those two mesh right? Think about those things.

is Interior design and architecture considered a pre-major? like pre law or pre med?
Is interior design and architecture considered a pre major like pre law or premed woo? That's a good question. what I wanted to do for that one, just 'cause I don't want to give you wrong information is again reach out to your admissions counselor, can find your admissions counselor on our main webpage admissionscolostate.edu.
Another question, how will we know what major is right for us and how many credits you need? John, do you wanna take that one?
Well, until the first one, I would say uhm.
Sam Lopez
04:29:01 PM
how will we know what major is right for us and how many credits we need
To the point I was talking about today, start the process of major exploration. So if you saw me, I think you probably did. If you saw a few minutes ago, the content I was talking about, you can start by start by self reflection, thinking about what's important to you interests. Think about where you really Excel academically. What are you good at? Is it, I guess as an example, oftentimes I find students are really good at, say, communication.
And, uh, reading and language in critical thinking and sometimes students maybe are a little bit better in the Sciences and in math, more technical areas. So think about that would be an easy place to start. Think about, do you have natural inclination to one of those directions, or are you equally are you equally attracted to both? But I'm going to emphasize that's a good place to start, and rarely is the major deciding on a major process.

How to find your admissions counselor: https://admissions.colostate.edu/find-your-counselor/
Done quickly, David reference to a resource you have called my majors. That's a quick quiz. You can take the can start you in the right direction. My office. The Career Center actually has several resources on our website that you may be able to use right now, even though you're not a student yet.
They can help in this process. Sometimes taking your career assessment like my majors, but a different one can be helpful. There are two or three others that the Career Center offers that can be helpful. That's really. I can't. Just like I can't. No one's really going to at CSU is going to decide. Decide your major for you. I can't really tell you how long it will take or exactly how to do it. And let's see, I'm sorry I think I'm missing the second part of your question.
I think it was how many credits does it take for certain majors?
Yeah, I think the best way that I did this is if you Google your major so political science and type in CSU major completion checklist. That's what you need, right? The major completion checklist is away for you. Can say OK if I'm majoring in XY and Z. Here's the classes I'm going to take to get that degree.

If I'm interested in being a teacher, what track/major do you think would be best for that?
Another question, if you're interested in being a teacher, what major do you think would be the best for that? Well, it depends on what grade you want to teach. Depends on what subject you want to teach. You know for students who are wanting to do pre K up to maybe third, 4th and 5th grade. We look at early childhood education for six grade and above. It starts in subject area. So let's say you want to do history. Your major would be history with a concentration in history education.

Can i participate in ROTC at Boulder while attending CSU?
Next question, can I participate in ROTC at Boulder while attending? See it's you. I have no idea I think, but you should know that we have ROTC here on our campus. Both Army and Air Force.

what about Wildlife Biology or Equestrian?
Caleb White
04:32:23 PM
Do I have to have prior experience with horses to be an equine science major?
What about wildlife biology or equestrian? We have two equine science questions back to back, so I'm going to try and answer both. Wildlife biology is a great program. We are located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, so it gives us lots of opportunities to go explore that area. One of the things I liked about that is that you have the opportunity to do a lot of field work, so definitely check that out. Our equine science majors are so cool, so one you gotta check out the new equine center that's being built. It's really cool.
But we have students who have never ridden a horse before, who are studying equine science right? Because what we're looking at is not just horses, right? You're also looking at and learning about large animal biology and reproduction. There are students in the equine science major who have wanted to go on and do equine horse therapy, which is becoming more and more important. So tons to do.

Is there a number I can call for what classes I need and how the hours slash pay works? I'm not sure if your meaning more tuition, but Yes you can go on our website. So the best way to find out I'm going to post this message in the chat only because I get asked that quite a bit of like what does it cost for attendance. So I'm going to try and find a Lincoln. I'm going to post that our financial aid does a great job trying to do the best we can. Getting estimates for students, so that's what I would do for calling right now because so many of our offices are virtual. I would recommend trying to contact them via.

Next question, would I be able to major in interior design an minor in architect and engineering? I'd have to go through a list of our miners. I don't know all of them off the top of my head, but what a great thing to put on the list. So I will go ahead and again provide another link on the chat and this is a list of all of our majors, as well as all of all of our miners. Again, great question to be asking. Yeah, done.
Yeah, I'm just I'm almost 100% certain you cannot. Minor and engineering.
Perfect see, that's why we have you here John.

04:34:35 PM
What majors are currently impacted?
Awesome, this next question I'm not sure is what majors are currently impacted. I'm not sure if you're wondering, like how does COVID-19 change. Things were really still navigating things as we go along. In these current circumstances, and I would continue to check ourmainpagejustcolostate.edu for updates.
Who I always like these kind of questions John chime in if you have thoughts of how good is your apparel and merchandising program, John, do you want to add thoughts first?
I think it's excellent. I can actually think of three or four.
Tamar Smith
04:34:53 PM
How good is your apparel and merchandising program ?
People I know that graduated from the program that work at really well known apparel companies. So some of the there are some major outdoors apparel companies in Colorado. Anne are alums. Definitely work there and some of the bigger companies I spoke to a graduate of that program a few months ago that after her time at CSU, moved to. I believe it was Seattle and worked for Nike and some other apparel companies so.
I guess that to me would be a testament to the quality of that program.
Absolutely, and I think I've looked through that major. They also require internships in that major, so that's another thing, right? We're going to make sure you have that experience before you go into the field.
Alright, What Animal Science be a good major for someone exploring Privett John do you have thoughts 'cause I do but I want to make sure.
Erin Burke
04:36:08 PM
Would animal science be a good major for someone exploring pre vet studies?
The one thing I would add is with animal science. There is parts of it that doesn't involve the processing of beef and pork and poultry. If that is not your jam, don't do that major right. I just want to make sure you know that right, that those are questions there. So again, what should I expect with the animal science major we hit on a couple of those? If you're interested in animal science, you should absolutely look up who Temple Grandin is. Temple Grandin is a phenomenal person to just know about, but she's also a faculty.
Isabella Ku
04:36:22 PM
What should I expect with the Animal Science major?
Here at CSU, so humble brag not so humble.

Is the biomedical major extremely competitive? or as competitive as business?
Is the bio medical science major extremely competitive or as competitive? I don't know what extremely competitive means. what I will say though, is that one is pretty popular in that college is pretty small, so I would say a student interested in learning about that. Maybe I'm trying to apply early, but again, the biomedical science major. That's not the only entrance into Biomedical Sciences. Biomedical Sciences is a great program, but I just want to make sure we dispel the myth.
But that's the only way into the health field.

Would I be able to major in interior design, and minor in architect and engineering?
Would I be able to major in and? Uh, I think we ask that question.
Is there a point where it becomes too late to switch majors? So always be contacting your academic advisor to make sure you're chatting with them. John, do you have any thoughts to add?
Grace McCoy
04:37:31 PM
Is there a point where it becomes "too late" to switch majors?
UM, I, I guess it just varies depending on the individual. I would so I could say yes there is a point where it's, uh, it may be too late to switch majors. I've talked to students who are looking at switching majors as a senior so you know, is that too late? It might be too late for that person. Do they have the resources to switch majors, which might mean.
An additional three years as an undergrad. They may not. So if you're asking is there a specific point?
No, I I technically I would say the answer is no, and generally the further along you get into a major, the harder it is to switch to an unrelated major. There are measures that have a lot of course working common an if you switch to something that was semi parallel that could reduce the amount of time you would have left.
And in general, I think switching like switching your last year in college to a new major is is very challenging. It's my guess is it's not commonly done.
Good question. Can you explain a UCC and how that goes towards your major AUC sees all University core curriculum so I like it's a really fancy way of saying your Gen eds, right? That's how I think sometimes people think of it. So public speaking, composition or comp one 150. That's a really common class. So AUC is what the University has identified as we want all students to be able to have mastered some of these core curriculum pieces so that work towards your degree.
Cam the Ram
04:39:01 PM
Can you explain AUCC and how that goes toward your major?
They're not extra credits, right? You're not adding work. The credits that you weren't in your AUC go towards your degree completion.
Ooh, this next question John. I'm going to give to you. I love science and I'm good at it, but I'm terrible at math. Any suggestions?
Oftentimes these don't have to be related, so um.
Abby Bradley
04:39:17 PM
I love science and I'm good at it, but I am terrible at math. Any suggestions?
I know there are. I'm thinking of exceptions immediately, like for instance a chemistry is the science, but chemistry has a lot of math in it, but something like biology, not a lot of math, so not not necessarily you. Maybe they're not always tide together? How's that for a short answer?
Will Mahaffey
04:40:07 PM
How do I know if I need to take placement exams?
I love that I love that next question. How do I know if I need to take placement exams? Your ram, web students? If you're an admitted student and you have logged into your ram web, there's a great resource information at the bottom in it. That said, I believe it says my math placement journey. That's going to be a great resource. Additionally, if you go on the orientation website orientation.colostate.edu, they have information as well as about those placement exams.
If you are admitted as an undeclared student, can you get into a competitive major later on? So how this works and I use my own experience. So I was political science, which I know is not competitive but hang on right. In order to change into that major, I had to take one or two entry level classes to make sure that I was going to do well, and then I was put in there, right? So think of it. Similarly, maybe you're interested in business, So what you would do is if you're thinking about going into business, set up an appointment with an advisor in the College of business.
Courtney Burroughs
04:40:42 PM
If you are admitted as undeclared can you get into a competitive major later on?
And talk about what is that path look like.
John, another question for you. If you are interested in broadcasting, what major would you choose?
Elise Ancell
04:41:14 PM
If you are interested in broadcasting what major would you choose?
Well, I would choose a journalism and media communication. I think it's JMC right now. I think that's the title that would be to go to in that program. You will. You will have opportunities to do internships in broadcasting and there there are classes in that major that are broadcasting related classes. So although you could choose probably many other majors, I would go with journalism and media communication.
Awesome, are you able to do a college sport? So we here are CSU were at Division One. That's the highest level you can go in college athletics. And there are three levels of tears in support in sports here. It's easy. Oh, there's intermural you against other current students. We have tons of intramural sports. They're really, really fun. There's club. I wrestled for the first year at CSU in club wrestling. Don't ask me 10 questions. I wasn't very good. I went to 113.
Lily Maes
04:42:04 PM
Are you able to do a college sport
True story uhm, but that club level. You're competing against other club teams at other schools. And then there's Division One. So that's sort of how that works out. Yes, you can play sports. I mean, there's a reason it's called student athlete, right? That's built in.
Do you have to be an advanced rider to the rodeo team?

Does field work contribute to the zoology major
Does field work contribute to the zoology major? I think it depends because some majors are going to have in your later years what we call capstones or internship requirements and that counts towards credit. So it's all going to depend on your major. Do you have anything to add on that one John, that one's a tricky one.
I do believe for zoology there there are built-in electives that are internships are field work. So if kind of you're wondering if you have things that you've done or working out in the field would contribute to credits to graduate.
I I'm kind of. I feel like the answer is yes.
Lauren Ressetar
04:43:11 PM
what should I do if my admissions counselor hasn't replied to my messages in almost 2 weeks?
Another question, if you're having trouble getting in contact with your admissions counselor on our website thehome1andmissionscolostate.edu, there's a live chat function so you can reach out that way to to get your questions answered.
What do John another one for you? I'm just keep calling you on these tough ones.
What if you are interested in a major that doesn't align with your natural inclination? For example, what if you are better at English and communication, but you're more interested in math and science majors like engineering or biology? Oh, that's a good one.
Alex Turner
04:43:37 PM
What if you are interested in a major that doesn't align with your natural inclination? For example, what if you are better at english and communication but you are more interested in math and science majors like Engineering or Biology?
Well, anything is possible. I would say you would need to if you are academically deficient or challenged in an area you would need to maybe work harder in order to succeed. So yeah, again, it's not impossible and.
I I will tell you, I've seen a lot of students that say have a goal of working in Healthcare Medison. Maybe they want to be a doctor or a physical therapist, but academically they are not very good at Sciences or biology that although it's not a challenge that can't be overcome.
Yeah, I guess that's where I'll leave that. It could be more challenging, but it's still possible. Depends on it. Depends on your ability to.
To to take on things that you are not strong in and improve them so it's possible.
Keegan Dunnington
04:44:26 PM
What majors are CSU known for?
Awesome. What majors are CSU known for? This one is always tricky. I mean, a lot of people do know about our vet school, right? And that our vet school at the graduate level is one of the best. So I think a lot of people know that, but I really have enjoyed learning more about our psychology program, but also our College of Engineering is amazing. And so as our College of business. But this gets into some other questions. I'm seeing it like how good is X major or why major?
And this is tricky only because rankings are so subjective right of who is doing the rankings and those things. I would say when people ask like how good is a major to me, the question that we follow up like what do you want to do right? If you're wanting to go and get a lot of field experience in that major before you graduate, then you need to look into it and do some homework of like OK can this major get me where I want to go? But also we are not going to have a major at our University. That's bad, but that's not what we're in the business of. We want to provide you with the Premier education.
And so that's really important, John. I'm not sure we're getting a lot of questions about how good certain programs are. I'm not sure if you would add anything else.
Answer totally encapsulated, but I would say.
Oh, thank you. Thank you OK.
Is there a way I could verge two majors together? A major news miner, for example art therapy. what I converge experience in psychology, therapy and art?
You know it depends on what you want to do I would say a good recommendation for that as students to double major. I think that's an easy way to do it. Now if you're interested in any mental health related field, we are one of the few schools that offers a bachelors level in social work right? Because eventually if you're wanting to go into professional therapy licensure, you're going to need additional schooling beyond this undergrad. So think about ways that you can work towards that now. So yes, you could do a double major in art in psychology. That would be great.
Or you could do art in social science or social social work. Cash lost my words.
It did. There I is computer science, part of a competitive major. It is. Yes it is.
Uh, what is the CSU philosophy and academic? Or can you talk about a you CC in what kind of courses all majors take?
Good question. I'll try and do my best. All University core curriculum isn't set classes, it's set categories. I think one that comes to mind is humanities and arts, right? So you need to take at least one to two classes that focus on maybe history or a social science, right? Maybe you need to do some classes in math, etc.
Alright, the two. I'm getting questions. If you wanted to change a major, that's easy. So if you haven't attended orientation yet, what you can do to change your major is on your ram web. The first link is going to be admissions as well as application status, so you can just go and click that first link that says go to my status page and then you can change your major. You can change your major twice before you end attend orientation yet.

Has sports management become a major yet? If not, are there plans to make it a major in the future?
Have Sports Management become a major yet? If not, are there plans to make it in the major in the future? I have no idea if it's going to be a major, maybe one day. Maybe not. Sports management is a great minor an I would say students get a minor in sports management with a major in business. Done anything to add about sports management.
Yeah, I like what he said, I agree.
Call How do I transfer credits for taking a dual enrollment class? Dual enrollment is great so long as those credits are coming from an accredited institution. They will transfer over. If you are an incoming student, usually what happens is our transcripts are evaluated by the registrar's office and are able to evaluate an award credit there on your ram web. Again, I'm going to plug ram web forever because you students should start getting familiar with it now on ram web there's a drop down option that says Records.
Lily Maes
04:48:34 PM
Do you guys have a theatre major?
And Under Records is transfer credit keep checking to see if those credits are going to be there.
Do you guys have a theater major? We do and with two concentrations, one in performance in the other in production? Are John given this one to you? I love physics and math and I like to work with my hands and I've been told many times I could do engineering. But there are so many types in so many applications. Where do I start?

William Walton
04:49:11 PM
I was accepted into the engineering college but now I’m not sure. Can I switch to undeclared and if so how do I do that?
Oh lot of places to start. UM, I one really cool thing you could do that's easy, easy is go to YouTube and do a search for something like a day in the life of a mechanical engineer day in the life of a civil engineer day in the life of an electronics engineer. You can also just Google that and start reading about the different disciplines of engineering. I do believe the situation the question you presented in this situation you describe.
Is really common. People will say to students you're great at this. I think you should do engineering and I've talked to a lot of engineering students that say, you know I didn't really understand what engineering was about. I just took their advice and jumped in and it turns out it's not really for me, so I would just say do advance research on what Rick Engineering is really all about because I'm yeah, I agree if you're if you're good. If you like to do hands-on work. Um, like especially mechanical engineering, could be a fit, but.
You know there are many other things too that fit that, like art, is really hands-on. UM, major, just for one. So, uh, do do your research and don't just assume that if someone tells you that the engineering is for you, I would go to YouTube and look at, you know it's it's free if you have. If you can access that, look up a day in the life of engineering videos.

04:50:34 PM
Is CSU still requiring SAT and ACT test scores?
Awesome, some quick questions deceased. You have an ice rink on our physical campus. We do not, but we do have two. Club hockey teams. Are we still requiring S80 and AC T test scores? We are. We do not need the written essay portion of those, but we still need an exam score.
OK, I'm trying. I'm trying to get through all the questions so some of the questions have similar themes. I'm trying to get to ones that we haven't answered yet, only because we only have a little bit more of 10 minutes, so I'm trying not to dismiss any questions, but.
Does a music major have content or concentrations for different genres like jazz, or does it look? Or does it work for different activities like the live playing are marching band or music theory? Good question. 'cause Music has a couple of different whether you wanted to do different things but they don't, the concentrations aren't by genre, so for example in music we have music therapy, music, education, music, composition, music, performance. So it really going to kind of depend on what you want to do there.
Sean Kirkpatrick
04:51:22 PM
Does the music major have concentrations for different genres like jazz? Or does it work for different activities, like live playing or marching band or music theory?
Alright, if I go in as undecided or undeclared here at CSU, How do I know which classes to take? This is such a good question. Now remember you're going to be given an academic advisor even if you are undeclared. So even if you are an undeclared major right there still going to walk you through what classes to take John, do you want to share a little bit about that a little bit more?
Marco Ayala
04:51:50 PM
If I go in as "undecided," how do I know which classes to take?
I'm just yeah you, um, your undeclared advisor will have plenty of recommendations about what classes to take, so you don't. I don't think you need to worry about really researching that on your own. Advisors are used to students just starting out and have plenty of recommendations.
Selena Wang
04:52:05 PM
Can you minor in healthcare or nursing?
Can you minor in healthcare or nursing? So this is an important question because we do not have at CSU a bachelors of Science in nursing, right? What we have is those majors. I mentioned Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology. It is going to depend on a little bit about you know what you're looking for. So I would again in the chat I posted all of the miners that you can look for.
The term trying to see can I get a dual major in neuroscience and psychology? Yes.
What majors would you recommend for Privett? Again depends on the animal you want to work with. If you want large animal veterinarian, I would go into animal science just because they learn a lot about large animal biology. If you want to do more of like diseases or cancers in small animals, microbiology right so it's going to depend. I would start with the science and it could be any of them.
Kennia Pineda
04:53:07 PM
what language class do you guy have
So again, I'm just trying to make sure I go through all of them. What language classes do you all have? So we have three. Then it's not a language, it's called language literature and culture. We are learning about all three and the language, literature and culture majors. I believe our Spanish, French and German in regards to minors. We have much more I known. As I mentioned during my presentation. We also have some in American Sign Language, sorry.
Oscar Oravec

Do you super score SAT scores?
Mackenzie Hughes
04:53:44 PM
when should I try to get an admission counselor?
Claudio Carrizo
04:54:05 PM
Are you requiring SAT scores
I would say another question, so quick question. Do you super score your essay T? Yeah we do. We take an account all of your exam scores. When should I try to get an admissions counselor? You're actually already assigned an admissions counselor. It's based off where you're coming from. Again, in the link that I put in the chat and you may have to dig for it if you just Google CSU, find my counselor, you'll be able to find that another question. Yet we're still requiring essay Tees.
John and give you one question, trying to decide between electrical and mechanical. Any advice for a student thinking about those do?
Fances Raphael
04:54:14 PM
I'm trying to decide between Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, do you guys have any advice for me??
I guess think about the type of products or devices that you want to be involved in, so mechanical could be could be everything, engines, machines, cell phone cases. So they tend to be maybe I would say a little bit more on the side of the mechanical whereas electrical or electronics. Obviously this is more about circuit boards, circuits and computers, so I think it depends on just kind of what you're interested on that level.
Sarah Withey
04:54:55 PM
Does CSU offer classes that pertain to photojournalism and documentary?
Disease you offer classes that pertain to photo journalism and documentary making.
Um John fill in. If you have extra.
I'm not 100% sure, but pretty sure in the journalism and media communication program there is photojournalism.
Yep, absolutely. And in art there's a concentration in photo imagery. Our photo image making as well. How difficult would it be to major in animal science and psychology? Ann minor in Spanish. That's awesome that you want to do that. When I get questions like this, like how difficult is it, it's hard to have an objective answer only because every student is different right now. what I would say is to ultimately talk with your academic advisor. Get their thoughts right because they're going to walk through it like, what would it look like to get those?
Mackenzie Hughes
04:55:40 PM
how difficult would it be to double major in animal science and psychology and minor in spanish?

04:55:45 PM
would I be able to get a dual major in neuroscience and psychology?
Things, and I think that's really important, right? Thinking about what do you want to study and how am I going to do a major an? Is it possible? Altough but important questions again. We've had a student who has graduated with three degrees. Anything is possible, right? It's going to ultimately depend on the student.
Alright, if I'm a Colorado resident living in Hawaii, is my admissions counselor, the Colorado Hawaii person reach out to Heather Danielle. She's the Hawaii counselor.
I'm interested in interior design. Can I get in contact with someone from that major that I can talk to? I believe so again, reach out to your admissions counselor. We will get you in contact.
I was not able to take the essay T Yeah I'm a junior. When should I apply to your school? Oh the juniors out there. I hear you we're getting this question a lot. Unfortunately I don't have a concrete answer for you. what I will say though is that remember the essay tea or AC T is just one component of your application. You can send us your still your letter of rec, your transcript, your personal statement. You can submit everything that you can until your SAT scores are in our application. For the fall is going to open August 1st and that's where you can start majoring in that.
Matthew Winner
04:56:54 PM
I was not able to take the SAT yet, I’m a junior. When should I apply to your school?
John, this is a tough one. I'll ask. I'll see how you answer. Do you have any majors in beauty? How would you answer that?
Lily Maes
04:57:04 PM
Do you have any major in beauty?
Lauren Ressetar
04:57:05 PM
if I'm a Colorado resident living in Hawaii is my admissions counselor the Colorado or Hawaii person?
So if it's maybe cosmetology you're thinking of?
Uhm, I no. I don't believe so.
Alexa Solis DeLaCruz
04:57:19 PM
I'm interested in Interior Design can I get in contact with someone from that Major that I can talk to?
Yeah, 'cause it depends on what you want to do in beauty. If I mean fashion design, absolutely I love that major. I think there's such cool things. Alright, so John, we are out of time. Folks. I know there are more questions out there. I was trying to get through as many as I could and I know I didn't get to all of them so I apologize. But remember this is not your only way to engage. You can reach out to myself david.feryatcolostate.edu or you can reach out to John John. Do you have any last parting wisdom for our folks here?
I would say there are a lot of great questions today and I can I. I think it's completely normal to feel like there's a right way to do things in a wrong way, and I sense that and some of your questions and just know it's there really isn't. People arrive at these decisions and do things very uniquely so.
