Hello! My name is Cassie and I am from Loveland!
He got some Colorado people, some Arizona people.
OK, so you can keep entering where you're from in the chat and we're going to go ahead and get started, so just some things to say before we start. If you have any technical difficulties, it usually always just works to hop off the web and R and then just hop right back on our panelists and myself will do the same if something happens on our end. So we will come back shortly if one of our videos disconnects. This webinar is also being recorded so you will have the opportunity to go back and see you something you missed, but hopefully there won't be any technical.
Healthiest, so let's start by introducing the panel so my name is Jenna more and I am a junior majoring in music performance and minoring in Arts administration and leadership. I am also the campus events and marketing coordinator for the College of Liberal Arts Student Ambassador team. So let's go to Doctor Rose Henschel. Next, introduce yourself.
Anyone who wants to go next?
Hi there, my name is Megan Vallier. I also go bye MB uhm I major in political science with a concentration in US government law and policy and I have two minors, one in English, an one an interdisciplinary legal studies. I am a senior heading into my senior year.
And I am the leadership development and communication coordinator for the College of liberal arts student ambassador team.
Can you can everybody hear me?
OK, my name is Mary. I am going to be a junior this upcoming year. I am majoring in political science with a concentration in global politics, an minoring and ethnic studies an I am the campus visits and tours coordinator for the ambassador team.
In my name is Jessica Rencher. I'm a doctoral student at CSU. I completed my Masters as well at CSU in human resources in education and I'm currently the recruitment coordinator for the College of liberal arts.
Excellent, so we're going to give a short presentation that will first give you a general idea about the College of Arts in an academic sense, and the second talk about different student involvement opportunities offered here afterwards, we'll have artistun ambassadors, share some of their experience with their involvements, followed by a question and answer session. You can also type questions in the chat as you think of them, and I will turn it over to rose to start the presentation.
Alright, thank you rose. So to continue. There are almost 400 different organizations offered at CSU student organizations at CSU that can appeal to a variety of interests and after many great opportunities to get involved on campus and in the community, over 40 of these organizations are specifically related to the College of liberal arts. Many are very Department that rose just outlined to you offer these extracurricular opportunities, and many of these clubs and organizations consist of students who are simply interested in the topics.

All Registered CSU Organizations: https://ramlink.campuslabs.com/engage/organizations
This means that you do not necessarily have to have a major or minor declared in a specific discipline in order to join a club from that discipline. We will have opportunities to talk about some of these organizations at CSU, but if you would like to explore some of these on your own, I am going to copy and paste the links that you see here into the chat. So this first one is for all registered CSU organizations and then this second one. Once I can get it here.

CLA Organizations: https://www.libarts.colostate.edu/students/organizations/
CL a specific organizations.
OK, so here are a few examples of the types of clubs and organizations that are offered through the College of liberal arts. Of course we offer much more than you see here, but these will give you a good idea of the types of opportunities available on the left. You'll see that we offer Department specific honor societies that allow for more student LED projects and research opportunities. The honor societies are one of the only categories in which you do have to have a major or minor declared for the specific Department. Also, if you would like to be a representative of.
College of liberal arts as a whole, either through the ambassador team that we're apart of or through the Deans Leadership Council. You would need to have a major declared for something in the college level rides, whereas the organizations you see on the right do not have specific major requirements. We have several different clubs dedicated to learning different languages, such as the American Sign Language club or the Japanese club, which is pretty popular. We also have several other organizations that pertained two Department specific interests. Students can take part can partake.
Is opportunity is either to get more experienced in their College of liberal arts degree or pursue another interest while they're getting their degree in another area. The clubs are also a great way for students to have social social interactions with people who had only interest to them.
The College of Arts also has these opportunities for student involvement. There are internships, service and community based learning capstone courses and projects. An education abroad opportunities that are all specific to Department within the College of Arts. Oftentimes, you'll hear about these opportunities by communicating with a faculty member or with the CSU Career Center. The College Ville Arts actually has its own career education team that is dedicated to helping students pursuing interests in the Lib rides. This year, some of the opportunities you see here.
Especially the education abroad ones may be affected by the health precautions associated with COVID-19, but the University is in the process of finding ways to safely offer each one of these opportunities to students.
So that's the end of our very short presentation, and this slide that we have up now has some information on each of the student ambassadors on the panel today you can see what organizations specific to the College of liberal arts or not, that we are currently or have been apart of while at CSU. So we're going to have each student briefly share their involvement experience and we can answer some questions along the way. So let's start with Meg since she's at the top of the list here.
Alright, can you hear me, yeah.
OK, sweet, uh, my name is MB again. Super happy to be here. Um, Political Science, English legal studies. All of those things, but involvement. That's why we're here. So exciting. I've been involved with the College of liberal arts ambassador team for about two years, and that's my longest running involvement with the college. And really, in my University career, and that's been really awesome. I served as our campus visits and tours coordinator an now. I am our leadership development and communication coordinator, which is super awesome. Lots of leadership skills there. I'm also part of the University honors program.
Heading into my senior year, which means honors thesis. So I'm thinking about my honors thesis topic right now. The topic is urban camping banzan, the 8th amendment, cruel and unusual punishment caused, so it's a constitutional law project which I'm really excited about. I am also engaging in undergraduate research this summer, so if anybody is interested in doing any kind of research, they're really awesome opportunities to get involved with faculty members that are conducting research in your Department. This summer I'll be working with doctor Heather Hicks in the Political Science Department.
And we're doing some research on racial and gender stereotypes of female politicians in popular media, so that's going to be, I think, a really cool project. I've also done quite a few internships during my time at CSU. I interned with a nonprofit organization called global justice and that was an unpaid internship. I did an unpaid internship, was an unpaid internship, and then it turned into a paid internship which was really cool. I did an unpaid internship with the Larimer County Board of County Commissioners and I'm currently completing an internship with the Larimer County Jail.
Which has also been really wonderful. A couple of things that have nothing to do with the College of liberal arts, but I really enjoy are some different service opportunities that I've had the opportunity to get involved in. One of them is the American Legion Auxiliary, which is a veteran service organization. I'm part of Unit 1879 through CSU, which is one of the only University affiliated AHL units in the country and we serve our veterans through the adult learner veteran services office at CSU, which is great and also I started a knitting club at CSU and we donate.
All of the things that we make a two individuals experiencing homelessness in the Fort Collins community. So if you're interested at all in knitting, I am the person to talk to and it just goes to show if there's a club that doesn't exist and see see you when you want it to exist. Fill out a little paperwork, find four of your closest friends and start the club. It's not that hard.
Thank you MB married you wanna share?
So hello, my name is Mary again, um, so I am the campus visits and tours coordinator for this upcoming year which was previously MB position and so ultimately my role is to train ambassadors on how to give tours and destinations and also revise the tour pack it and I am also part of ASU which which stands for associated students of cars that University. Ultimately it is a student government.
Of CSU, and there's lots of opportunities to get involved. I started out with becoming an associate senator and then made my way up to a senator and there's just a lot of different bills that you can sign and really make your voice heard and so let me know if you have any questions about that. I am also part of model United Nations, which I actually joined when I was in college and did not do in high school, but I've been having a lot of fun with it.
It did start out as a smaller organization, but it has made its way up to a lot of people and so let me know if you have questions about that as well. I was also previously an orientation leader this past summer and that was tons of fun because I got to meet a lot of the incoming freshmen and got to hear their interest and it was just a great way to give tours and meet new people and enhance a lot of the leadership skills that I've been wanting to gain.
I am also a resident assistant, which is basically a short long for RA and so I am basically in charge of creating a community and a safe space within the residence halls and actually found out about this position through another organization called Hall Council. And so if you really enjoy creating events and coming up with cool ways to engage, the residents are living in the residence halls. That's definitely a great way to do it.
Thank you Mary. So now for me, um, my name is Jenna. Again. I have been involved with the College of Arts Ambassador team for a little over a year now. I am the new campus events and marketing coordinator which means that I help a lot with our social media efforts as well as planning events for future students.
As far as musical ensembles, I've been a part of the CSU Wind Symphony and the University orchestra for two years at CSU, which are the both the top wins? Both top band ensemble and top orchestra ensemble, and I've also been a part of the marching band for two years. This upcoming semester will of course be my third year and my second year serving as a flute and Siculo section leader. I am also a member of the International Women's fraternity on campus Sigma Alpha Yoda for this organization. I serve both.
As both the editor and the scholarship share.
Finally, I am an honor student and I am excited to begin brainstorming ideas for my honors thesis that will be due at the end of my senior year. I'm planning on doing it on the relationship between International Tourism an music, so let's see how that goes.
And that's all I have, so this is now our question and answer session. If you have any additional questions about our involvement, sore other involvement opportunities, please enter them in the chat and will be happy to answer them for you.
And the great thing is, even though the three of us only represent a small amount of the organizations through our college and through the University, we do know about a lot of other things happening around campus. So if there's something you're interested in, we can likely point you that the direction of that thing so.
Roze Hentschell
02:21:27 PM
What are you all interested in, participants?
And you know, as people are thinking of questions because I'm sure that they have a minute. Might take a minute just to type them in. I wanted to share a fun story for my undergrad experience because I did not study in the College of liberal arts, but in one of my organic chemistry labs. My professor, the first day said I'm going to make you science majors right every day and he was like, you know, you think you got off easy by going into the Sciences where you won't have to write but.
What he told us it was once we graduated, we were going to have to know how to write resumes and cover letters and he said you have to be able to write. And so I think that's one of the things that CLA offers students. That's so important is if you can't communicate what you can do and what you know, it will be more challenging to get a job when you're done. So maybe your mindset isn't there right now, but I will never forget the Dean of math and science telling us that, and he made us right all the time. So that's just a fun story for my undergrad.
I don't know if you ladies have anything to speak to, that uhm, but oh, we've gotta question great.
Cassie is saying that she is interested in Anthro Biology, an archaeology, and she is curious about what a capstone class was.
Well, I can provide you some links to some anthropology clubs and organizations that we have and we can also find some links about the Department in general and.
One of the people on the panel describe better what a capstone classes.

Cool and we have a another question from Taylor. You says my concentration is pottery and asking if there are any clubs for that right now. I do not know of a specific club for pottery at the College of liberal arts, but that's something that maybe could be explored through the other. Almost 400 organizations at CSU. And if you want to start your own pottery club, you can also do that through the slice office or the really long acronym for basically starting clubs.

So if you want to get in contact with somebody through that, I'm putting the link into the chat for you. But yeah, that's on rim link and you can learn a little bit more about that.

The pottery professors are amazing!
OK, so it is worth thinking of more questions. I have a question for MB. Once I find it I was gonna say can you share a little bit more in depth about one of your internship experiences? I know because you made that really cool Instagram video about it so you can share some of that.
Yeah, absolutely. Um, internships are basically one of my favorite things, and I think the reason is not because they are unpaid or it's like, just like a lot of time like that is a lot of time, but I really just learn so much through my internship opportunities. That's the really cool thing about having internships. Is that you can go into different industries and different organizations and learn some really cool skills that you didn't even know that you wanted to know or didn't know that you needed to know. So I learned a lot about nonprofit management with.
The nonprofit that I worked for and I don't want to work for a nonprofit. Nothing against nonprofits, just all my goals. But I realized how important that was, because there are times when government and public servants have to direct people to nonprofit resources in the community. When the government doesn't offer those types of services. So that was a really great skill. Working with the Larimer County Board of Commissioners was really awesome because I think County government is really misunderstood. I literally did the internship 'cause I didn't know enough about County government.
And so it was a really cool opportunity to learn more about what's happening in Larimer County and how intertwined CSU is with the County and with the community, which was really, really awesome. And my current internship at the jail has been so fascinating. I'm learning so so so much, even though it is remote, I had this opportunity to work on a huge project building and assistance packet or Assistance Program Resource Packet so that when an inmate is released from the jail.
They have an opportunity to look through different community resources that we have in Northern Colorado, so it's been really wonderful, like being able to do these kinds of professional development opportunities and the great thing is like you can. I don't think it's difficult to find internships in Northern Colorado around campus around town. My academic success coordinator. Your academic advisor is a really great resource for finding internships and jobs around campus or around town. The Career Center as a really great resource if you're looking for an internship and sometimes even just talking a faculty members. That's how I was.
Alerted of the jail internship opportunity, one of my faculty members in the Sociology Department, it was like, hey, I'm also the Lieutenant Sheriff at the jail were taking an intern. I applied and that's how it happened. So it's really great having those kinds of connections with faculty and different staff members in the college. So yeah, if anybody has any questions about internships, I just love them. I cannot get enough of them.
Thank you MB. Are you gonna say something?
So while we're waiting for more questions, I have a question for you, Mary. Uhm, I was wondering more about your experience with a SES yuan. What skills do you think you have gained because of this involvement?
And thank you. Very yeah, that sounds like it was really valuable and even applicable to what your major is too.
Again, so something else that I have to ask is that a lot of people wonder if they want to get involved, but they're not sure how to find out about them or where they hear them from. So from both legs or marry, whoever wants to go first? How did you learn about any of these involvement opportunities?
Yeah, um, something that was really helpful for me and I don't know how this will look, but I'm I'm sure that the student organization offices figuring it out as the fall involvement Expo. Usually they'll have different clubs and organizations that will come out and table in the middle of the Plaza. Like I said, I don't know how it's going to look this fall, but there's always opportunities that the it's called student leadership involvement in community engagement. That office is putting out.
The acronym is slice, so that's what I'm talking about. When I say slice so the slice office puts out different email newsletters and they'll put out like these involvement expose and then ram link, which is the link that we gave you earlier to look at all the registered CSU organizations. Those that were really great ways for me to find out about clubs that were happening and different groups on campus, and so I definitely encourage everybody to check out those resources. Another thing sometimes like you'll learn about stuff from your professors and Department.
Faculty members, I didn't know we have a political science fun club. That's literally what it's called. It's called Poly Sci Fun Club and that was something I heard about from my professors. We have any English club like a social club called the inklings. I learned about that from one of my professors as well, so sometimes it's faculty members. Other times I heard about the ambassador program for my academic advisor, so it comes from a lot of different sources, but I promise if you just keep asking people like eventually, you'll find somebody who knows.
About what you're looking for.
Yeah, I just want to echo what Meg said. And she did mention the slice office which you can actually go into and there's an advisor there for you which you can tell them about your interests and you just don't know what clubs or organizations that are out there and they can help connect you with the president of the organization or when they meet, and so definitely a great resource to get into. And she megs also mentioned tabling events, and that's actually how I found out about the ambassador team.
02:34:03 PM
Is it easy to stay on top of academics and be part of a club?
Roze Hentschell
02:34:05 PM
Yes.
Um, so trust me, it might be annoying when you're in the Plaza on campus with all these tables, but that's a great way to find out about them as well.
Thank you Mary. I'll share uhm how I learned about it too. But first we have another question we have. Is it easy to stay on top of academics and be a part of a club?
I will say that sometimes it is a time management frame to it, but at least four am I experience. I found that all of my.
Involvements but I've been in. I've always been able to make time for them in some way, and at least for me, I've been able to at least relate the experience is back to being valuable to my studies in some way or another. So yeah, there's definitely a time management, but I think it's still very valuable, and I've always been able to make time for it. What would you say to that Megson Mary?
Yeah, I think that, um, that's something that my family was like always like really, like my mom always told me. Like Megan, if you're going to get involved in a club like you gotta make sure it doesn't interfere with your classes. So it's something that's always been really top of mind for me. And then I just kept getting more and more involved in my mom was like what are you doing and I was like no, it's OK. I'm figuring it out. I'm managing my time. The really cool thing I instantly that I didn't really understand about college when I got to college.
Was that you're not in class all the time, like the same way that you are usually in high school. You know you get there at like 8 in the morning. You leave it two or three in your in class the entire day? Or is there some days? I'm only in class for an hour and a half three hours depending on how many classes I have. And so because there's less class time, there's usually more out of class work to do, but it allows you to really manage your time and you know I'm going to take these three or four hours, do homework, and then I'll give myself a break by going to Poly side fun club.
Or whatever else. It's a really great way to give yourself a break between the academic stuff to go socialize, and to have that kind of Co curricular experience. But I found like I'm not going to lie at times. It can be difficult during finals or during midterms or something like that, but I think a lot of times people are really flexible in the college environment too. I know with my Knitting Club it's kind of a show up when you can type of situation so that it's not like if you're not here. Every work we're going to like kick you out. That's not usually how organizations work, it's.
A little bit more casual, inflexible and people really work with you.
Yeah, and I'll just say that yeah, sorry Jenna, Um, I'll just say that time management is something that I'm still working on, but I felt like it helped strengthen that for me because with all of my involvement, I was like I have to get this done at this time. So it kind of forced me to get things done ahead of time rather than procrastinating like I usually do.
Yeah, that's true. Sometimes the more involved you are, the better you are at managing your time because you realize you have so many things to do and you're like I want to do them all.
I've always been told if you want to get something done, ask a busy person and I'm not saying You know, fill your calendar with only club activities, but I do think that, uhm, you become more productive the more you create a schedule that has structured to it. And obviously we all know you know. Studying 3040 hours a week for a full time student is what you really need to be doing to be successful. But enhancing that width clubs is a great thing to do.
Elena Solano
02:37:49 PM
Is there a club day on campus? And if so when is it?
And you might be surprised at the relationships that you build along the way, and maybe you find a study buddy randomly in one of your organizations that you're part of.
Yeah, I'm it's in my best friends in my Knitting Club. It's really awesome. We like hang out all the time and Super Cute. Same thing with the ambassador. Is like we're all really good friends. So it's really cool to find community that way.
I think we just got a new question.
Elena is asking is there a club day on campus and if so when is it? Does anyone know on the panel know if there is a day specific to just all CSU clubs?
Because I know there are opportunities in which clubs will be on different days, especially at the beginning of the year at the in front of the Lorry Student Center Plaza. Trying to advertise and get people to join. and I know that there are.
Like specific clubs that will have events for themselves on different days, but I'm not sure if there's a universitywide club day. Does anyone else have any ideas about that?
Theo Reese
02:40:07 PM
What is the Model UN like?
And just one more thing to add to that, as one of as an officer of one of the student organizations on campus, I did get an email from the slice office and they asked us to submit photos and video clips because they're making a huge video of all of our not all but a lot of our different student organizations that they're going to send out for people to view. So that's going to be a really cool way.
Elena Solano
02:40:39 PM
ok, thank you
To learn a lot about different organizations is we're all submitting our photos and videos to be a part of this huge involvement video.
Well, we've got another question. This one is for you Mary. What is model United Nations like?
It is awesome we meet every week and we get assigned a new country to be delegates for and the issues that in politics that we discuss in the meeting. Uhm are actually about current events that are going on right now and so it's not only fun but you also are learning about current events and becoming more knowledgeable and are learning the skills to discuss it and.
During I believe after fall break and before winter break, we also traveled to different states. I wasn't able to go with them this year, but they did go to California and we also do.
We also do conferences with other universities like do you and so it's a ton of fun and definitely join if you if you decide to.
Thank you very so we still have a little bit more time for a few more questions.
So as we're thinking of that, I still have to share how I heard about my opportunities. So for me I learned about the student ambassador team from a recommendation from my private flute instructor. Unless something nice about the Performing Arts as you get really in developing individualized teaching so their professors get to know you really well. And then as far as music ensemble is, it's my major. So of course I had to participate in them, but.
All of our auditioned ensembles are open to any major. It's just whoever has the best audition get selected. But we also have some non auditioned ensembles as well. And then I it was kind of funny because I didn't expect to join a fraternity or sorority at all. When I came to CSU. But then I learned about this one that was specific for music for the International Women's music fraternity. An myself. I'm also really interested in international relations and travel. So the fact that this was a fraternity dedicated to music.
On an international scale, that was really appealing to me and then one of the reasons I actually chose CSU was because I could still be in honors program while being a music student. When that was not true for all universities, so I'm really excited to be in that program here.
So while we're waiting, I don't know if they'll be any more questions, but until then, kids magazine Mary, or whoever else on the panel wants to share just what they found is really valuable about either their college over there, arts, education, or an experience you had through an organization here.
Oh gosh, yeah, that's that's hard. That's a really hard question. Bringing out the top ones. Uhm, I think like what? What kind of Jessica was talking about earlier? Um, with being able to communicate it's been really wonderful. Being an ambassador for the college. If you would have met me two years ago, you would have been like that's not the same person like she is shy. She doesn't know how to talk to people like yeah, roses, nodding she knew me two years ago. That's when we first met. So it really has transformed me into more like of an outgoing person. and I feel like I can really communicate.
With people which is Super Gray, I've loved it. I love meeting with students and families and just really being able to connect people to things that they're interested in. It's been really wonderful and I love CL a so it's been super fun being a representative.
I can kind of speak to that with MB two. I would say that I am a lot more confident with communication than I was before I came to see us. you and I mean, especially in the Performing Arts. You have to put yourself out there all the time and situations that may seem scary, so it's made other situations like interviews for for the College of Arts. and I was supposed to have a campus and events summer job, but that didn't workout, but I got it, but it made me feel a lot more confident in those interviews, situations and.
I would also say that that's something I found really valuable in the College of liberal rights.
Yeah, I agree with both legs and Jenn as well. And in my experience I've just made really impactful connections with my professors that have not only given me life advice is, but they have also helped me network and find other connections to help me succeed in my future. And so that's just been very valuable an I just appreciate that.
