Hi!
OK, well that's happening. There's a couple other logistical things that I wanted to mention.

10:02:06 AM
hello!
No, we have a couple features on this late training.
So if you need to have close captioning.
You have the functionality to click that.
I could click it on my end, but that's only going to benefit me. It doesn't open it up to everyone else, so if you feel that you need close captioning during this presentation, by all means locate it and feel free to leave it on.
And the other thing that I wanted to mention a couple little side note about the close captioning. This platform for closed captioning is not super reliable, so just forewarning you. If you choose to switch on the close captioning, it's not the most reliable. And then I will be showing a video throughout this presentation to start us off and.
The audio is not the best either. This is what I've been told. So again, if I will have the close captioning feature feature on during the video, so that should help you too. But the audio is not the best.
So before we actually start this presentation, I do want to show the land acknowledgement video and basically before I get it started, csus land acknowledgement is a statement crafted by a variety of indigenous faculty and staff as well as other officials at CSU. The statement recognizes the long history of native peoples and nations that lived in Sioux Stewart, the land where the University now resides.
The land acknowledgment statement also maintains the connection. Native people in nations still have and will always have to this land.
So I am actually going to screen share with you all.
And he actually pull up the video first.
So bear with me while I re pull it up.
Nicole Pawloski

Where does everyone want to study abroad?!
State University of knowledge and slippery set at the land later on today is a traditional ancestral homelands but the Arapaho, Cheyenne and you'd nations in people.
people as a regular stupors of this land had all the relatives within it.
As these words of acknowledgement are spoken in her eyes, pieces have to their traditional.
Access to education and inclusion.
That significantly that our founding came at the dire promise to native nations and people.
We must practice recognizing our institutional history, responsibility.

There goes beyond land acknowledgement, so for anyone that wants to view it again or didn't quite capture it due to audio for whatever reason, feel free to click on that to hear the land acknowledgement on your own time.
So as I stated before an, I'll reintroduce myself for those that have joined a little bit later. Um my name is Sade, I am one of the education abroad coordinators who works at Colorado State University. My regions that I particularly advise students with our Spain and Portugal.
I actually studied abroad. I studied abroad in Nairobi, Kenya as an undergrad. Anne, I studied in South Africa, Cape Town as a master's student and I absolutely loved. I love the experience. It was so transformative and I was able to use a lot of my skills that I had gathered. You know, living in a different, a different part of the world and using them personally and professionally. So I hope that.
This presentation is going to give you the tools that you need to take the next steps in your venture. Tord exploring education abroad opportunities.
So today I'm here to really just address the education abroad experience at CSU by the end of the presentation, you'll be able to know the what, why, when, where and how of education abroad.
So this slide is a really great slide because it really just demonstrates the wide variety of opportunities that you can take when you study abroad. Alot of students think that when you study your broad, it's only studying. And while that is a major part of Education of broad there so many other layers of of things that you can participate in.
And so we actually changed our office from study abroad to education abroad a couple years ago because study abroad just wasn't encompassing all the incredible experiences students were having.
So In addition to study abroad programs, there are so many opportunities for internships, volunteering in conducting research abroad. So you can think of education abroad as a general term that can encompass all of these activities. And as you will see on the screen, one in five CSU graduates have participated in an international experience which is very very, very great. And it's very high on in five.
So here in here at CSU the education abroad office can help advise and support you on any one of these opportunities.
OK, so there are students people that I meet with and talk to you and they say you know what do I gain from an education abroad experience? And that's a really good question. There are a variety of academic career and personal benefits and education abroad that an education abroad experience can give you. As I had just briefly mentioned, after my education abroad experience.
I really found some some really in depth internal passions that I hadn't discovered about myself until I actually participated in and abroad experience. I really noticed. Noticed how passionate and compassionate I was about, you know, working with individuals with disabilities and that really didn't happen until I studied abroad and participated in some internship opportunities and volunteering opportunities so.
The Sky is the limit. I like to say there's so many things that you can learn about yourself and delve into while you are abroad.
And there's also like a common myth that education abroad would delay your at your graduation rate. In fact, a recent CSU study found that those who had an education abroad abroad experience graduated at the same rate, if not quicker than CSU students. That did not go abroad, which is amazing.
So just to tell you a little bit, what are Rams are broad? Are doing a CSU Rams abroad are all over the Globe. We have 900 plus programs an over 880.
Plus countries and the cool thing about it is that we actually have students who go to all Seven continents. How cool is that? So we're really proud to be able to offer CSU students so many options when it comes to their education abroad experience.
In addition to all the different places students can go abroad, all terms, so this is including fall semester, spring semester, academic year, calendar year, summer break, winter break, spring break, so many options, right? So the programs can be. They can range from like one week to a full year and everything in between. So basically you can find a fit. We basically work with students to find a fit for.
We won keeping in mind location, academic focus, and budget.
So another common myth about education abroad is that you need to be able to speak a foreign language to study abroad and a non speaking country.
It is indeed a myth, as CSU a majority of our programs are non English speaking are in non English speaking countries and those programs offer academic coursework in English. For example, you could study business in Thailand or engineering and Spain all with English curriculum.
OK, so this page is a really, really cool feature that I am excited to kind of show. So we have our recommended education abroad programs list their online at are on our website so nearly nearly every CSU Department now has an approved recommended programs abroad list. Because there are just so many.
Programs in degree requirements that can hit enhance the CSU experience.
Nicole Pawloski
10:14:35 AM
Recommend Programs Page: https://international.colostate.edu/educationabroad/students/getting-started/recommended-programs-abroad/
Can reference fires or search for recommended programs on the education abroad website? There may be other programs available beyond these. These list, but we hope this gives you a starting place and for sure if you have specific programs. If you have a major in mind and you may not see your major on the recommended program list, that's when now you can start to have conversations with the education abroad center and talk about exploring more. More of these opportunities and depth.
So what I would love for you all to do thank you to my colleague Nicole who has um embedded the recommended program website into our chat feature. I would love for you all to take a couple of minutes. Click on that link.
The recommended program list link and once you hit get into the website, just click on a major click on a major and click on.
Maybe a place that you would like to study even if you don't click on the country. Click on a major and see what comes up. Uhm, I just want you to get a snapshot of that.
Right, so that you're able to see how it really it really starts with the exploration. It really starts with you taking initiative in exploring some programs based on your major, maybe thinking about country of interest. And this is a wonderful starting place, so taking the initiative by going on this website is going to help you in so many ways. So I'll give you just a few minutes to click on the website, go to a major and see all the programs that pop up.
And if you want to take a step further, you could more most certainly communicate in the chat box you know, based on your major of interest, what popped up that you found very interesting list of program in the chat, or a list of country in the chat.
Um, feel free to not do that if you don't want you, but um.
It helps to know that you tapped into. It helps for me to know that you've tapped into it.
So I'll just give a few more minutes for spokes that are still getting into the website. Clicking on a major to see what programs come up.
We will go on to the next slide.
OK, so as I think this was a really good segue because as you go into the website, the recommended list and start to look at some of the programs based of- your major or major of interest. You will see many types of programs that actually start to populate or that you're able to see.
And so when we talk about program types in order to offer CSU students as many education abroad opportunities as possible, we have a variety of models. So we have CSU sponsored programs. These are exchange programs, their faculty and staff, LED programs you, and then you have CSU affiliate programs. CSU affiliate programs are program providers, their third party.
They're not part of the CSU offered programs, but we partner with these third party providers in order to offer a wider range of education abroad opportunities for students. So we have very intentional specific program providers that CSU works with in order to expand the opportunities available for students. And then we have an affiliated program. So there are programs that are not related to CSU. They're not CSU affiliate.
And we would ask that you know, if for any reason you were to pursue an unaffiliated program that you would be talking with the education abroad office. More about that because it tends to get just a little bit more complex in terms of credits and transfer of credits.
Um are CSU sponsored programs as well as well as our CSU affiliate programs? We go through a particular process.
As to how credits can get our transfer back to CSU, which I'll talk about later on in the presentation.
Each of these programs we offer we have offer a variety of experiences, from housing, accommodations, classroom experiences, field work opportunities, internship placements, the list goes on and on and on.
OK, so we have an example here of one of our exchange programs. This program is offered in Sydney and although it's English speaking, it's very different culture in terms of housing there is on campus housing and office off campus housing options.
So this University is located on a beautiful Parkland campus, about 30 minutes North of Sydney, Australia. the University has its own dedicated train station for easy access.
And it's about. It's about walking distance from major shopping centers. So, uh, if you don't know too much about Sydney, you'll know a lot about Sydney. If this is the place that you choose to study. I mean, it's a large city with multitudes of activities, museums, social events, parks, the very very beautiful spot. So this is an example of a semester, so you'd be honest semester long program with this particular.
Again, you need more specific information about the breakdown of what what this exchange program really means, or what or in comparison to some of the other program types. Feel free to reach out to the education abroad center, but you also can put it in the chat box and we will answer those two.
OK, so this is another example of another exchange program and it is located in Japan. This program provides students with the opportunity to explore Japan and Asia studies through classroom instruction and interaction with Japanese people and students. So it's another semester long exchange program again.
Campus on campus housing is an option, but then also another option that we have our homestays so you will find out as you start exploring different types of programs and different housing options, there will be indicators on this specific programme websites where you can go For more information for housing and so our housing the housing options are so expensive. I mean you have some some programs that have homestays, some programs that have apartments.
Some programs that have like residential housing as you would find on like a college campus.
A little bit about this place. Um, it's located in Iraq.
To over 400,000 residents situated one hour from Osaka, Japan's second largest business hub of.
It's a beautiful place. I mean just japans Ashley on one of my bucket list like I would love to go there. So perhaps in the future I would visit, but I've heard really great things also about this exchange program, so these are just examples to provide you with just the variety of options at CSU offers and different types of program, different program types and what they might look like an offer. So again, this exchange program is similar to the.
The other one that we covered.
OK, so this one is located in Prague and this is a CSU affiliate program, so again it through a third party vendor that works with CSU to offer a variety of programs so you can take advantage of this program in a semester or a summer program or summer option. There is on campus University housing with this program and.
Just a little bit about Prague is the capital and largest city in the Czech Republic.
The 14th largest city in the European Union, situated in the northwest of the country, betala.
River, the city is home to about 1.3 million people, while its large urban zone is estimated to have a population of 2.6 million and has temperate climates with warm summers and chilly winters. So another really great program to take advantage if you're interested in Prague and maybe your major aligns with what is offered in this country.
OK, let's go to the next one.
So we have our total Santos enter Mexico Program. I will say this is a pretty popular program. UM students that have, uh, so it's a fish wildlife and conservation biology semester in total Santos, so that's one of the programs. There's also a liberal arts and community engagement in total Santos, Mexico. There's a oceanography.
Program a sustainable travel. An alternative tourism and a social entrepreneurship. So I think one of the I know one of the reasons why this this place is pretty popular. Just because there are a lot of different varieties of program offerings.
And from what I've heard, it is just absolutely beautiful. Absolutely beautiful place. So this one is a good example of a faculty and staff led short-term program. So you have a staff person or a faculty, which would be a professor.
Really, with you on these programs, so these programs tend to be shorter, so they're not semester. They can range from one week to three or four weeks, so they're shorter terms, and there's really a faculty that's leading you that is with you that is participating in the programs of the program with you, and they have maybe their own curriculum that they've centered around the program.
And so a lot of students like to take advantage of these short-term programs as well, especially if their if their major grad plan is has a pretty strict timeline, or if their major is pretty specific. Some students will take advantage of the shorter term programs which have proven to be very successful.
A little bit about total Santos center, so it's located in the beautiful Baja California sur. Just an hour North of Cabo San Lucas. Uh, students have an opportunity to enjoy this quiet town just a mile from the beaches on the Pacific Ocean. This this spring semester program will be rich with excursions and experiment experimental learning opportunities, so beautiful beaches.
Beautiful Desert, Beautiful Mountains. Sounds like an awesome place so that's an option of a option of a sorry. An example. The faculty staff led short-term program.
OK, so let's talk about how these transfer credits workout, because I know that's been a hot topic for a lot of students that I've met with that work. Exploring interest in education abroad experiences. So one of the big questions is how we get how the transfer credit process works or just credits work. So first of all, CSU offers over 100 programs that give students.
Students can easily see if the credits will work in their degrees.
So for transfer credits there are. There's like this two step process to make sure that your credits transfer.
How'd they transferred back to CSU? So first of all, you have to have your coursework reviewed by Csus Registrars Office. They will determine how many credits each course is worth, and if it will be considered an upper division or lower division credit.
Secondly, your academic Department will determine how the coursework will fulfill your degree requirements. So with these two approvals you will know if your credits will keep you on track for your graduation time in a timely manner.
Once you decide on a program, that's when you really work with your education abroad coordinator to move forward with next steps.
One major benefit of education abroad is this thing called the FCC EAUCC 3 E waiver. Your academic advisor would be able to discuss this even more in depth with you, but all students who work through our office, the education abroad office will earn free credits and build receive a waiver.
For the global and cultural awareness AUC requirement. So in a nutshell, you're not. You won't earn an additional 3 credits, but it will satisfy the AUC C3.
Free E requirement on your degree progress report.
Again, this might sound a little bit over your head at this point, but as you start to to decide on some programs that you are interested in as your meeting with an education abroad coordinator in your academic advisor, this AUCC 3 E requirement or waiver will become more clear to you. And if you have any additional questions about that, feel free to ask myself and your academic advisor.
Or any education abroad coordinator that you happen to speak with, but it's really nice. It's it's a. It's a waiver that that you know fulfills academic credit on your report, so that's pretty much what it is in a nutshell.
OK, so we have a very very dedicated.
Financial aid office at CSU and we encourage everyone to go and talk to them. We have Cindy in Victoria are two financial aid coordinators that help work with our first of all work with our office and they help support students throughout this process of their education abroad experience. In terms of finances. So that's what we really like to really discuss with students.
Right now, like what's your your regional interest? We love to know. You know how this is going to fit with your academic major. But we also love to know, you know what's your budget look like? What our programs that you might want to look like? Look for that, are, you know, within your budget. We certainly don't want students to go over budget.
An an be loads upon loads of in debt.
Do an education abroad experience, so that's why we have you meet with the financial aid advisors to talk about. What are some options you know? What are some grants that you can take that you can possibly apply for? We have Colorado. We have education abroad scholarships.
Financial aid is also an option as well, but.
It's interesting because the good news about this is that 99% of your CSU of CSU.
Finance, sorry, typo in some of my notes. Let me start again. The good news is that 99% of your financial aid if you choose to take that out. I can go abroad with you.
Again, it's a good idea to talk to the financial aid advisors. It's very individual based and really based on that program where you would find yourself thinking about the budget in the cost and what actions you would like to take so good people. We always suggest that you talk with them throughout your education or broad expert exploration.
OK, next slide here. So we have our education abroad coordinators.
I would say like if they like through the exploring, the recommended programs through going on the education abroad website and doing some searches based on your program based on your region of interest, I wouldn't also encourage you that if you're at a point where you're like, you know I've explored. I've done my research. Yes, this is something that I want to do or I'm still on the fence. Or, you know, I really just need to talk to someone else to get a better perspective or a different perspective.
These are the folks to talk to so you can schedule an appointment to meet with one of our coordinators.
Our coordinator specialize in different regions of the world, so you're assigned corner coordinator will be based on your program of choice.
If you haven't decided where you would like to go abroad yet.
We'll talk more about how to do so, um, in these next few slides. If you already know where you like to go abroad, you also want to ask yourself what you would like to do abroad and how long you would like to be abroad. And this and this will help us determine who your coordinator will be. So a number of different questions that ask yourself as you're exploring an based on that information that you're coming up with, we'd be able to match you with the coordinator.
Based on regional coordinator. Based on what you how you respond to these questions, if that makes sense.
So as you can see, based on this slide we have different coordinators in different regions that are able and willing to assist you when you're ready.
Some of this I've already kind of just covered in terms of next steps. Next step for you might just be to reach out to education abroad center Ann and ask to schedule an appointment to meet with the coordinator.
You can also find us on social media. We are on IG in to see what all the Rams that are studying abroad have done. You know, have done on their study abroad trips or sorry study abroad. Educational opportunities.
That is one of the ways that you can follow us and see what's going on with students. Have studied abroad.
Last but not least, we have, uhm, the website here for you. Or sorry, the yeah the the website here for you. So if you have any questions feel free to reach out to us at education.abroad@colostate.edu we have our phone number listed on here but I would highly encourage you all to email us versus calling just because right now we are all working remotely.
And we are best mode of communication right now is just via.
Um via email and how we've actually been advising students remotely, which has been really cool, is that we have a platform where we can set up virtual meetings with students to talk to them more about their options, and I think that this has been an awesome, awesome, creative way to still be in contact and interaction with students that are interested in studying abroad.
And then once we get back to campus, whenever that will be, we are located in Laurel Hall. So we provided a map here for you to show you where we are. So once we get back on campus in your that type of person when you need that physical interaction and a physical space, feel free to also visit us in person once we get to that point.
So without any further ado, I would love to open it up for questions you all have been very quiet on the chat.
Which is fine, but uhm, I do want to make sure that you are.
Can yeah that you all can answer your questions accordingly and get your questions answered. So feel free to.
To chat some questions into the chat box.
Macy Pendleton
10:37:45 AM
How do short abroad trips work (like 1-2 weeks)? What do you do during that short time?
Alright, Sade can you hear me?
Great, it looks like we have a question. So the first question is from Macey and macey. Ask how do short abroad trips like one to two weeks? What do you do during that short time?
Sure, yeah, that's, uh, thank you may see for asking that question. That's a really good question. So as I had stated before, there is so many different options and that's a really great thing because a lot of students can take advantage of all the course off all the office program offerings that we have.
So for example, if you have if you plan to take advantage of a short-term education abroad experience.
That that might look like having a a program where a faculty or staff member is as part of your experience, so the staff or the faculty they would offer maybe 3 credits. Three weeks Bahamas and you would have.
You know a curriculum based on that program offered in that country. So that could include.
You know, because it's an education abroad experience, you're going to have, and the academic portion of it so that it might include writing papers or some sort of creative platform for you to be graded appan. But that also includes activity, so you'll be able to delve into excursions.
Really take advantage of some of the educational opportunities that.
Available on this program and then of course, there's time there could be opportunities for you to travel and explore different areas of where you're going to be at, but.
That's tip, they all are kind of. They all kind of vary depending on those specific programs, but I know from students that I've been I've worked with, they really valued some of the short-term programs because first of all, it was an opportunity for them to, you know, connect with the faculty or staff on campus. Sometimes those program leaders, faculty, and staff leading these programs may be able to write them letters of recommendation for future career.
And in job opportunities, at allows students to go with a cohort of students versus maybe in more individual travel. So you would be going you'd be going abroad with the faculty or staff as well as other CSU students to the program to the destination.
And so yeah, a combination of academic curriculum, exploration excursions down, time to explore. And it's just been an awesome opportunity for students to just really immerse themselves into a different culture, a different environment to gain so much experience. So really good question, Macy.
Great, thanks for asking that.
Uhm, should a we have another? We have a few other questions coming through.
Emily asked, when is the soonest incoming freshman?
Emily Wilson
10:41:23 AM
When is the soonest incoming freshman can do education abroad?
So when's the earliest a new student could go abroad?
Yeah, good question, Emily, thank you for asking that one too. So we typically encourage students to study abroad. There sophomore in junior year.
You know when you are a first year student, particularly first year, first semester, you are very new to the college environment in college classes, so that's really an opportunity for you to acclimate yourself appropriately to your new experience, your new environment.
All new college classes and we want you to make sure that you have your priorities focused on that. And so we have had students.
Study abroad their second semester of their first year. Um, these are students that we have additional conversations with in terms of just making sure, uhm, you know, the maturity level is is there in terms of MI at a state, not just based on. OK, I want to study abroad because I found this great opportunity. But like in my mental E also ready to study abroad.
Had an opportunity to really exhaust the resources here at CSU before venturing to another location abroad and having to know a whole new whole. Another curriculum in kind of way of being in a different environment, so um.
I have worked with students. I have studied abroad their second semester of their first year. I highly encourage you to be very proactive, though, because in any event. I think that when you study abroad. Your sophomore and junior year. This is a really good opportunity as you being a first year student to explore so many options so many opportunities not to rush into education abroad, but it really is a dynamic process that requires.
Communication with their education abroad coordinator with your academic advisor. You know you have the transfer credit process with the registrar's office, so.
Her students that are extremely proactive and have done their research way ahead of time, but typically we encourage students to study abroad. There sophomore in junior year. I have questions that come up. Can I study around my last year?
It depends on when you go. I we highly discourage students from studying abroad there last semester of their senior year. Just because that is the time that you are now preparing for graduation and there are things that come up that you have to make sure you solidify in order for you to successfully graduate and so. But there are students that are, like you know, this is my last year and I think I want to take advantage of a short-term program.
Over winter break absolutely. I even have a student that I'm meeting with. She wants to take advantage of a January in Barcelona program which is 2 weeks a two to three weeks in January and this is her last semester before she graduates. So those are also opportunities as well. We just discourage students from participating in a semester long program their senior year. So very, very good question.
Great, um, I know we're coming up on time here, uhm, should I do? You want to continue answering questions or do you want me to just go ahead and chat those?
I can take one more question, if there is one more question. And then um, we will end the presentation today. And if you have any additional questions, the moderate are in Nicole, she can. She can answer those in the chat and we can. Also you can also email us too.

Are there any abroad service trip options? Or would those not fall under education abroad?
Great so adryana asked are there any abroad service trip options or with those not fall under education abroad?
Yes, good question. Yes we do offer on service learning opportunities for students, while their broad it kind of functions similarly like a internship. You be working with the education abroad coordinator, kind of to pinpoint what those service learning opportunities would look like based on a program of interest regionally. You know, sometimes your academic program.
Or your major may have certain requirements on. You know those service learning opportunities. If that's part of your major related coursework. So yes, those are. Those opportunities are also available for students. We would have more of A.
More specific conversation about that. Just because there wouldn't necessarily there wouldn't be any coursework involved. It would specifically be service learning. But yeah, we have those and we can talk about the more in depth as well.
Great, so I think I think that that's everything. Brace and Evelyn. I see that you have some additional questions.
It looks like you had some more questions about what she or your you know you should study abroad and I think Sade addressed that in one of her questions and then brace. I'll go ahead and answer your question in the chat box and if any like Sade mentioned. If anyone has any additional questions feel free to email us. We're always here to support you anwer. You can access us virtually throughout the summer, so if any additional questions pop up as you're starting to explore programs, feel free to reach out.
Yeah, thank you everybody. Thank you for joining us.
Alright thank you bye bye.

I am an out of state student. I have heard some colleges offer breaks on out of state tuition if you study abroad. Does CSU?
Nicole Pawloski
10:48:22 AM
Hi Bryce! Are you an out of state CSU student?
Bye everybody. It seems like there's no more questions, so I'm going to head out here. Feel free to email to email us if you have any other additional questions.
