Hello everyone, thank you for joining me today. I'm gonna give everybody just a minute or so more to make sure that everybody is started who would like to be in this meeting. So just one 2nd and then we'll go ahead and get started.
Couple people coming in, that's good. Um, I'm going to go ahead and get started just because we have a scant half hour with you and I want to make sure that I get the opportunity to answer all the questions that you might have about the library and the services that we have to offer you as students. So please know that I'm willing to answer questions anytime. So go ahead and type in the chat or the question section. That would be great. My name is Monica Latham and I'm a science librarian at Morgan Library.
My pronouncer she her hers an I'm going to just walk you through a couple things that you might need to know about the library today. This is what we're going to cover in this session today. Library resources. I'll get you a kind of a view of the building. Might look like inside with the stock photos I have since I can't get in there and take you through the website and tell you a bunch about the librarians and why we think we can help you with your coursework. So let's go ahead. So this is.
The Morgan library? Uh, this is the outside. The parking lot is right here. Um, this Android here, which would be the West once you get to campus. And since we can't go outside and inside and take you on a tour today, I'm going to just show you a couple pictures and tell you a little bit about building itself. So this is the entry way you walk in this. These students are headed into the library and you can notice that the entryways open and bright and beautiful, and we really, really like it.
The most thing that the libraries used for mostly is study space, of course. So we have a whole different array of study spaces for students to to do their work in unique study spaces, relaxing study spaces, and we have a lot of group study spaces. Now the library does is going to look a lot different for this semester, so keep that in mind. We're taking a lot out. A lot of those collaboratory spaces and turning it into smaller study areas so.
One thing about the building that you might need to know that would be interesting for you is is is sectioned out for noise levels so basement quiet study space mostly. I would say it's 100% now single study areas down there so it's quiet. Super quiet in the basement. First floor is where you're going to find the computer lab with the largest computer lab on campus we have there so a little louder second floor.
Even a little louder, uh, but you can find quiet study areas around the perimeter of the 2nd floor, which is kind of nice. They have those little cubicles, little shut in areas where you can just sit down and concentrate, and then the third floor is are what we call. Well we have a space called the collaboratory so you can go in there and big group projects and sit together and Hashem out and figure out that kind of thing. Now for this coming fall semester we have sectioned out those collaborative areas into more intimate study spaces.
Uh, since we don't want those big groups get together quite so much, but I'm sure will be back to normal at sometime in the future. There are also, um, steady rooms that you can reserve on line, and once we get to the website I'll show you how to do that. You can reserve your own private study room for up to three hours a day up to a week in advance, so will show you how to do that. So that is very helpful and interesting about the library building. We also have a giant courtyard in the middle, it's write-off, the.
The entry way you can walk through glass doors in this nice outdoor study space that I love let go out there and eat lunch too, which is nice. We have a help desk of course to offer you help in your studies if you're looking for something, they'll help you there. That's on the 1st floor and we also have Morgans grind coffee shop on the 1st floor and I must say we get asked about that a whole lot so hopefully that has for sure question there he yes we have food and yes you can have food in the library, just not around the computers.
Uh, so that's good. You can have drinks around the computer as if it's covered, so keep that in mind.
And of course we have books.
Have somebody who still there, uh? We also have a lot of other things for you to have access to their printers in the computer lab you can print. We've got you know, the staplers. The cutter is the.
Paper clips all that kind of thing and also at the loaner reserve desk, which is where you check out things on the 1st floor before you leave the library. And we have different items that you can check out. You can check out laptops, iPads, Gopros State Park passes, get markers, headphones, all kinds of things. So if you're ever wondering around campus or you're in between classes and you forgot something, head into the library. We probably have it for you to be able to check out.
So the next thing that I wanted to point out for you today is of course the website. You can get a lot of information and you can find out a lot of things on the library website.
And as things change, I mean things are evolving. You guys know every day? Uhm, this will be kept updated. So and this will become really important for you when we go to online learning after Thanksgiving break. So this will still be available to you. Is available right now. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to share my screen and I'm going to walk through a couple things with you so you can see where to find these things.
And you saw the eternity of me just a second ago. That's always fun. Screen sharing.
Please ask questions as we go along and I'll try to get back to those once I stop sharing this screen, so I am not on the home page. There we go. OK, so this is our library homepage.
You find out a lot of things here. The most important things to me as a librarian is this ask button right here up in the right hand corner. This is how you can get helmet anytime. Let me show you what that looks like a little bit here and I'll show you.
All the different ways you can get in contact with us now we will have. This box is chat box. This will be available to you 24 hours a day, Seven days a week.
All you have to do is click in their, type something, and there's a library in there to help you answer any questions that you might have.
You can also email is here or you can contact the librarian now. One great thing about your library is will is that every subject in college at the University has a subject specific library in set aside for you. So what that means is if you are taking a course and business and you have a business resource question, contact the business librarian and she will be happy to help you. Happens to be issue in this case.
And The thing is that you don't have to majoring in the subject if you're just taking the subject. You can contact the library nickname subject. Let me tell you if you take away nothing from this presentation except this one thing, please take this one thing away from it. Is that the librarian? The librarians have one job and one job only, and that is to get you the information you need to be successful in your coursework. So ask, ask, ask. We're here to help. We love it.
So contact the library and let me show you what that looks like. You can click on this.
And you'll notice it automatically comes up by subject, so you can just Scroll down to whatever subject you happen to be needing help with. There's your computer science right here. You can click on that and it will take you to a research guide for that. Or here's your library in here and you can do that and contact Jocelyn in this case. But it's a whole list and we we've got you covered and we've got resources to help you be successful, so there's that. So for me.
And I'm going to go ahead and click on libraries, get back to the home page that is the most important aspect of the home page, but that's 'cause I'm a librarian.
That that's why that is for me. You will also notice as you scroll around the website this ask this orange ask box right here is that chat box and it will follow you around so.
You can ask questions at anytime now. There's a lot of information about everything that the library has on this page. Of course, that's what a home pages for. You can scroll through this at your leisure. I'm not going to read a website for you. I'm sure you don't want me to do that, but the most asked question that we get at the help desk is answered right here on this page. And that is how to print. So how do you print at the library? It's not free and you have to go through a couple of steps to do that.
So that will set you tell you how to set up that account, and then I'm study room reservations and this is what I was talking about.
Right here, so you can click on that and you would log in with your ID and your password, which I'm sure you'll have memorized by the end of your first week in college.
CSU and um, then you can reserve a room on any level of the library for you to study.
OK, so you might notice this giant elephant in the room. This giant search box. Uhm, this is where you search for everything that the.
Sorry has to offer and it will search for everything. Um, physical or digital, uh, and so you can type it in there and it will show you all kinds of things. There are a couple of ways to narrow this down. You can get books, articles, an course reserves you can sort by that. Otherwise will just. You can just type in something that will give you all kinds of information.
Now one other thing that I want to point out to you that has to do with the librarians is that.
Um, is this box or this click zone? My brains not working, but right here you can click on this research help and just what it sounds like they were. Librarians have gathered together resources for you to help you in your research by subject so you don't have to search a million different places to find the information that you need. That might be helpful so you can search for subjects here. Or if you happen.
To know that there is a course guide for you, you can look here, or if you don't quite know where it would would land in these broad categories, can view all subjects and I'll show you at one of those looks like. But before I click out of this, you'll notice you have citation tools and guides. This kind of thing when you're writing papers. This is good place to come for that because no one can memorize all that, so you might have to take a look at that.
So I'm going to go ahead and click on this view all subject guide so you can see these are guides to all kinds of different.
Um topics. So, um, I'm going to be self serving and click on anthropology and geography and this is what a research guide will look for look like for you, so you'll have all kinds of information your library and will be here on the right hand side. And these are the topics that are covered in this guide right here. So if you're looking for articles in a class an anthro click and click on that and then will show you good sources to use for that.
And if you're looking for books, encyclopedias, star, got this all this kind of thing and this is just collected together for you for ease of use. Basically an I'm going to show you and of course you can.
Schedule an appointment with a librarian from here as well.
Now let me show you why this might be helpful to you. So if I go back to the home page here and um, hopefully Internet works up there, we go an I go to this A-Z database list and you might know about databases you might not know about databases but databases just.
Uh, a general gathering of information on the topic. OK, so instead of searching the whole World Wide Web for information and sitting through it is done. Some of that pre sorting for you. So that's why librarians are always like. She uses database. It will be easier to search. So I click on that and you'll notice that we have 370 databases found. Now these are made accessible to you by your being a student of CSU.
So if it has a little locked sign right here, that means something that you've paid forward to use and it's not open to the general public, so.
But there are a lot of them, right? So we don't expect you to know what they are all used for. I don't know what they're all used for. There are just too many, so that's why those research guides might be helpful. But if you don't need all of the How To Citation book things, you can also just click here by subjects, and you can sort that way. So if I need something for Forestry, Narine, Rangeland Science, I could click on it and these are your best bets.
To search for information in that subject area and again outlook, I'm favoring Jocelyn today. Jocelyn is the library in there, so all kinds of information there, so.
Yes, so questions about that.
Are there any questions about?
The website and what we have to offer you.
OK, So what I wanted to do is I really wanted to make sure that you had time to ask any questions that you had about the library or any concerns about the upcoming semester concerning the library and any specific resources that you know of that you know you'll need or that you might need. Then you can ask a librarian here and I can answer those questions for you.
So go ahead and you can put your questions in the chat, and if you don't have any questions, that's just that's just fine as well. But I'm here, I'm here for you to give you the information that you need so that you can be comfortable in your new, exciting and emperor in your.
In your introduction to the Ramaley, so any questions.
And I will try to monitor this. I'm all by myself, yeah?

Is it possible to reserve study spaces for online courses?
So kaylie thank you so much for the question. Um, I'm going to approve it so I can see.
Is it possible to reserve study spaces for online courses?
Um, if you have a CSU ID and password, that's all you need to reserve a study room so, um.
It really doesn't matter if you're a student, you can. You can reserve a study room online.
At the library. So if you happen to want to be on campus and you want to study room, that's where you would go into that study room reservation system and just log in and then you just wonder into your room when you get there. Yes, definitely.
Did that answer your question I hope.
I wish I could have you unmute that would be super fun.

10:17:42 AM
Yes! Thank you!
Thank you for the question any other questions?
Oh I I'm gonna tell you one question that we get all the time during orientation sessions is about.
Employment the library does employ a lot of student workers. I don't know what that will look like in the fall. I can imagine we we can't function without student workers, so there would definitely be some employment opportunities. I would imagine, but they will all be posted on your ram web, so check around web frequently and.
And look for that kind of information. But we love we love our students and is a great place to work so keep that in mind that you're looking for employment on campus.

10:18:41 AM
What are the hours the library is open?
OK, what are the The hours at the library is open? Thank you treasure uhm.
That's really tough for me to say at this time, because right now it's closed. Normally it's open from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM and then we have extended hours during finals week and midterms. So an interception hours are different.
They will keep those hours 7 to 10 and then unfortunately what we usually have access to is the study cube, which is right attached to the front door of the library which is open 24/7. But I don't think they can do that this semester. So yeah, I think it will be 7 to 10, so I'm sorry I can't give you more determined that answer, but I think we all can understand that situations are all weird.
And we are trying to keep with the the state covered guidelines. So yeah, great question, thank you.
I probably should have said that from the get go.
I'm trying to think of the ones we usually get during.
Oh, there is a great thing that I want to make you aware of. It is that remember when I said that little library in the librarians have one job and that's to get you what you need?
So part of the on that online or the Web. The home page on the Web is under services. There is a service called interlibrary loan, and what that means to you is that if you find a resource, you're out Googling away and you find the perfect resource, which is what usually happens, right? And we don't seem to have it in our catalog.
All you have to do is fill out that uh or click on the interlibrary loan option and we will find it for you. OK, that's our job and that's what will do and what what generally happens when you're on the UM, just searching around in the real world is there asking you to pay for access for for articles and items please please, please don't ever pay for anything you've paid for it with your tuition already.
So all that means is we need to know that you need it and will get it for you. So if it happens to be an article or something published digitally or or even something that we can scan and send to you digitally, we will do so. And all you have to do is fill out a request form.
An email again and they say it takes 48 hours to get a return and I've never ever had it take that long. It's usually the same day I'll put in a request in the morning and I will have a link to it in my inbox by the afternoon there super fast in the Inter Library Loan Department, so the first time you click on that is going to ask you a bunch of questions about your address and you're all kinds of things. It only does that one time, so don't let that dissuade you.
It will remember you after that and then you just request away.
And what will happen is the leader scan it, or they'll digitize it for you and then email you a link and you just click on it and it will be there for you. So again will get it for you. That's our job. Now if it happens to be in book.
For safe from another University or something like that, it will take a little bit longer to get here because of you know it has to be mailed. It's a physical item, so don't as long as you're not procrastinating on those kinds of things will. We will find you what you need, so keep that in mind. That's what we love to do and we have a really great interlibrary loan Department, so keep that in mind. Will get you what you need.
Alright, other questions.
I'll give everybody to few minutes. It's always awkward pauses. You'll notice these things now when you're doing meetings and classes on line. We have to have all those awkward pauses while people are typing that we're not used to having when we're in face to face, so feels awkward. But it's now the new normal so.
I'll let you percolate for a little minute then.
I really, really excited. I was really excited to see. I'm all your names near places where you're coming from. I'm so excited for you and and to have you on on campus. And, uh golly, I just hope I hope that works out and that it can because it's such an exciting time so.
Alright, well if there are no more questions I would give you the gift of time and I appreciate you coming and participating and I hope to see you in the library soon.
