Hello, welcome as people are logging in, you can go ahead and type in the chat what you're interested in studying at CSU and if you would like to participate in the honors program that will give me a chance to kind of see what our audiences today so I can tailor our academic session to you just a little bit about me. While you're all logging in. My name is Jessica Rencher Ann. I am the recruitment coordinator for the College of liberal arts.
And I work with a team of about 20 ambassadors an we work to set up webinars with prospective students and we do one on one chats as well as a lot of cool team building things as a team. I am also a doctoral student at CSU, so I actually really love everything that CSU has to offer from a student perspective and also from an employee's perspective. So while you're putting things in the chat.
And it looks like it doesn't look like anybody's entered anything yet.

Hi I'm Alex and I'm studying English with an emphasis in Literature, and I am interested in the Honors program!
Alright, if you don't want to put what you'd like to study, or if you would like to be in the Honors Program, at least, can you just write something in the chat? Oh, there we go? OK, thank you Alex. So Alex said hi, I'm studying English with an emphasis in literature and I'm interested in the honors program. Awesome, thank you, Alex.
This is helpful just so I kind of know what you all want to get out of this academic session, so I'm going to be speaking to the overall program we programs we have to offer at within CLA and then touch on the honors program and also some scholarships for some high achieving students. So that's going to be how I'm going to be approaching this. And then I also invited Tom Krebs to join us today.
Tom Krebs II
11:02:47 AM
Hello Friends :-)
Tom Krebs II
11:03:08 AM
We have scholarships too :-)
In Tom, is the recruitment director for a lot of our programs with music, and he's incredibly knowledgeable, so I asked him to join us just in case any of you have a questions about the music program, 'cause I know a lot of you high achieving students are also musicians, and so he'll have a chance to speak after I present a little bit. OK, let's see if anybody else Anan. Tom says hello friends. Hi Tom.
OK, so let's get started. I have a few questions for you to start affe and these are just general questions. Again, it's for me to get to know you and if there's anything I can answer specifically as we go along, just type it in the chat and I will make sure to answer those questions. So again, my name is Jessica Rencher and I am the recruitment coordinator. Here's our agenda for today.
And I'll I'll go in depth into some of the areas and then some of them. I'll just go a little quicker through. I think one of the most important things for you to know is about our overall programs and then also the scholarships. So here's my first question. Can you type in the chat if you are where you are in your studies? I think most of you are seniors, but just in case there's somebody else at a different point in their academic journey. If you can type that.
Tom also said they have scholarships too.

Great, so go ahead and write a if your high school sophomore younger be. If you are a junior we've got a senior. I'm assuming most of you are seniors.
Alex Hanson Hanson-Caldwell
11:04:31 AM
E
Great Alex is other. Alex can you type what you are?
OK, so that's helpful to know we're going to go on to the next one. I want to know, are you stressed out about this college search? Are you eager? Are you excited? Are you all of the above? Are you none of the above?
Chad Chargualaf
11:05:06 AM
D
Emmanuella Amankwaah
11:05:21 AM
D
And you can type just the letter. OK, so Chad says all of the above. I would expect that it's exciting to be looking at College of options. It's overwhelming and I'm sure alot alot of you. There's a lot of fear around it amidst Covid not knowing what to expect. We've got all of the above, yes?
That is a common response that I get from people is that they just feel so many different things as they are looking at their college options.
OK, we're going to move on and go to the value of liberal arts. But before we go to that, I have one more question for you. How confident are you in the value of a liberal arts degree? Are you extremely confident? Are you very confident, somewhat unsure or not at all?
Chad Chargualaf
11:06:06 AM
C
OK, Chad says somewhat confident, OK?
Alex Hanson Hanson-Caldwell
11:06:20 AM
c
OK, Alex says somewhat OK, great, we're going to go on to defining what the liberal arts are now. If you're a high achieving student, you probably are pretty familiar with the liberal arts, but if you're not, I'll go over just a little bit about who we are and what we do. So our goal is that when you are studying within the College of liberal arts that you were going to learn to negotiate that you're going to be good at empathizing with your community.
You're going to learn how to communicate and also read emotional or develop your emotional intelligence. We have so many creative students within our programs and their opportunities for everybody to do something awesome. So if you play an instrument, we have opportunities for you there. If you're artistic, we have opportunities for you there, either with different mediums or also digital programs that you can be creative and designing art with those.
We also have some really wonderful clubs in ways for you to get involved.
So have another question for you. Which of the following has the greatest impact on job placement? Because you're probably wondering as you're doing your college search.
Am I going to be able to get a job when I finish college? And that's a question a lot of graduate or undergraduate sask themselves as they're going through their programs. What we know is that 73% of employees or employers want people who can communicate who can work well with people who can problem solve. So I'm just curious which of the following has the greatest impact on or what you think has the greatest impact on job placement? Is it a researching?
Jobs be applying for jobs. See resume and interview preparation. D networking and connections or eat no differences.
Chad Chargualaf
11:08:27 AM
C
So take a minute and answer that question. Chad says resume and interview preparation.
Anybody else and you don't have to participate in these, they just help me so that I understand where you're at.
Emmanuella Amankwaah
11:08:46 AM
C
OK, another resume and interview preparation.
That's certainly one of the most important ones, and if you need practice with this at CSU, you can go to our Career Center and so the College of liberal arts has so many different ways to support you as a student, and so really depending on the job that you're looking for, it's going to involve all these steps and a lot of it is about communicating through all these steps. In my mind, they're all important, but it also depends on the jobs you're applying for. So when you begin.
Your studies at CSU or wherever you end up deciding to go one of the things that you're going to want to look for is campus resources. This will support your academic endeavors. While you're at the college, and so one of the things that you can do is while you're studying while your in your program, you can be working on your resume with workshops with the Career Center or doing mock interviews or preparing for internships they have on and off campus fairs.
Right now with covid, they're doing all off campus virtual Career Center services, and then even when you finish college, sometimes you can still go back and use our resources. They have different stipulations for awhile, but it's kind of a cool thing to know about. The Career Center is a very useful tool as I'm going through. If you have questions, go ahead and type in the chat. It doesn't have to be directly related to the slide I have in front of me. If you have things you want to know.
Go ahead and put them in there in.
So make sure to get to them during this presentation.
K so here's some things that are, uh, lemme are doing so. You can see that we have people as far back as 2006 in as recent as 2017. On here in these are. These are things are are doing with their CL 8 degrees, but I also want to let you know that we have lemme who are in broadcasting all over the US and we actually had Marty lens come on as an alarm to one of our webinars this summer and he's had a 20 year successful broadcasting.
Broadcasting Karere in South San Francisco, Sacramento and now he's returned back to Colorado, so our alarm do amazing things and he is at a point in his career where he said I want to give back. I'd love to help come to a web and R and speak to prospective students and let them know what they can do with a degree from the College of liberal arts so you can see here. We have an ESPN journalist.
We have someone who got a degree in music. It is an elite member of a SWAT team. We have student, former student attending law school. A lot of our students really are on that pre log track.
So here's an overview of the college. I'm curious if you can type in the chat, which is the most important to your college search. So is it academic programs? Is it campus location enrichment opportunities? Still figuring it out? Maybe you don't know yet, or something else entirely. So take a minute and type that in.
I know for me when I was looking at College, I really wanted to make sure I could take a few supplemental music classes and so that was something that was important to me as I was going along. I studied biology with an emphasis in teaching, and I knew that I wanted to still take some a few extra classes that would help inform my music practice. OK, Alex said A&B academic programs an location grade.
Alex Hanson Hanson-Caldwell
11:12:42 AM
A & B
Chad Chargualaf
11:12:53 AM
A and C
Now Alex, I'm looking at our participation list. It looks like you live in Colorado, so it looks like you are color rado person. You like it here. Chad says 8 and C unique enrichment opportunities in your chat. It looks like you're also from Colorado, so that's awesome.
Emmanuella Amankwaah
11:13:06 AM
B and A
I think I'm going to, I hope I say this name right Emanuela. I hope I didn't say that wrong. You're saying campus location and academic programs, great.
And you're also from Colorado, so we have a lot of Colorado people here. That means you probably are liking this state now. Here is we need to know CSU has 8 colleges. The College of Liberal Arts is one of those eight colleges. And so if you choose to study the arts, you're going to most likely be in the College of liberal arts. You might want to minor in something in the College of liberal arts. Maybe you want to get a degree in engineering and minor.
In something in the College of liberal arts and those are options that are available so the College of liberal arts provides a rigorous and well rounded education so that students can apply their creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills to advance the human experience.
If you get it degree from CSU in the College of liberal arts, here are some stats that you might want to know about. So we have about 800 students who have a second major in the liberal arts, 1600 of our students have a minor within CLA and 26% of our students are first Gen. This is a stat that I'm really proud of. I'm 1st Gen. Maybe you are to an if you are first Gen. Our land grant mission at CSU is that.
Everyone should have access to a good education and so I'm very proud to see that our stats are high for 1st Gen. For that reason, it means that we're serving our land grant mission and another great step. We have 29% students of color within the College of liberal arts. It's another one that we're really proud of. We want diversity. We want different perspectives. We want people from all walks of life. It really enriches the academic experience on campus.
75% of our students are Colorado residents and as you can see, even from just this academic session, we have a lot of Colorado people who are attending, so we're pretty loyal to our universities. We have about 25% non residence.
So within CLA, you're going to have 4 main disciplines. You're going to have the arts, and that's going to include art and art history. Dance, music in Tom can speak a little bit to that program in a little while theater. Then we have humanities, which is like English history, languages, philosophy, and within those humanities we also have environmental studies woven into them. So later on this month we're going to have some special webinars.
That are focused on environmentalism through English, through history, through philosophy. So if you're interested in that, please attend that web and arm. It's only offered once this month, and it'll be in two weeks on a Monday. Then we have social Sciences. You can see that list here. Interdiscipline interdisciplinary disciplines and those are listed here, so we have we have so so much diversity within the College of liberal arts with what you can study.
And again, if you have any questions as I'm going along, go ahead and type that in the chat.
So we have 19 majors, 58 concentrations in 33 miners.
And you might ask yourself how many courses to graduate. So this is the general plan for graduation. And of course she would be working with your advisor on your specific plan for graduation.
We have centers in facilities that are wonderful. Right now we have a hybrid model because of Kovid, and so some of our courses are in person. In some of them are in a virtual manner, but when they're on campus we have studios. We have a UCA which is a performing arts building and then we have our classrooms as well.

What Scholarships are offered at CSU and when is the best time to apply? I’m interested in perusing something in the Business Field.
So Chad wants to know what scholarships are offered at CSU? When is the best time to apply? I'm interested in pursuing something in the business field. OK, so great question chat. I'm going to jump ahead in these slides because I actually have a whole section on scholarships an I can come back to these other ones. So this is what I would say for you if you are high achieving student. We have this scholarship called the Blake Leadership Scholarship program at Colorado State University.
And the cool thing about this program is that it focuses on high achieving students. So like if you have a 4.4 four .0 an it also looks at if you are leader wherever you're at an it's really focused on students who have been disciplined. Anne worked hard in high school and are ready to go to college and get some funding. And so if you're interested in knowing more about that and you've worked hard and you've gone above and beyond.
I'm in your grades in your GPA. Reflect that. Then this is kind of like an elite program that we offer to students who are high achieving and it's an enhanced academic and Co curricular program so it has internships. It has education abroad research in leadership and these are components that are woven into your program of study. While you're at CSU, if you are able to earn this this spot in this program, so you'll.
Have fellow scholars you work within, then there's funding or other financial support and it's renew renewable for four years, so you could. You could technically have this for four year scholarship program.
The criteria is here. It's pretty clear. Obviously you have to be a seal, a student. They look at an overall weighted GPA of 4.0 and then they're looking for strong leadership skills as well as a commitment to the arts. And in addition to all of those things, you want to be admitted to the Honors Program.
If you want to apply its you want to apply by February 1st of your senior year, but I believe that their posting the application in October in cold wise is the person that you're going to want to contact about this. So let me type it in. The chat is name is Cole Wise at Kolo?
State.edu, and that's all post at so that you can contact him if you need to.
Let's see, let me make sure that I got his email correct.

11:20:20 AM
Thank you!
OK, that's correct. So contact Cole if you have more questions in chat. I'm happy to connect you with coal as well. Just let me know. Did that answer your question or are you looking for other things too? OK, great thank you wonderful. So I am going to take a break from presenting for little bit if we have more time I can come back and share the other pieces of the presentation, but I would love to give Tom a chance to speak to.
Their music program and the work that he does. He's phenomenal and so Tom. If you want to broadcast now, you can jump in on this.
Give a minute chance to do that.
In a hope that he has access to do that.
Tom are you able to broadcast.
Yeah, sure am there's just about 6 clicks between when you click broadcast and actually being able to talk.
OK, I'll let you take it from here and just share what you do and then the students you work with 'cause you do phenomenal work. An I just imagine that students probably have a lot of questions for you and then we can go back to my presentation.
Oh sure well, I just wanted to be here to make sure that you guys know that participation in all the extra curriculars that you're doing now as far as music theater dance are still available at CSU whether you are a major or non major so that's step one Step 2. If you are if you are interested in being a music theater or dance major or minor. We also have scholarships available that are talent based.
They have nothing to do with what your finances are and so that might be something to think of as well, and even if you hadn't been considering music theater dance as a primary major in some cases, the scholarship that you can receive makes it attractive to do as a second major sometimes it can take a little more time you know 4 and a half years. Maybe instead of 4 or sometimes 5, depending on what it is, but your scholarship from music theater or dance.
Pays for that fifth year if that makes any sense, so that's just something to know. And, please know that you will be able to continue participating at CSU in all of your favorite things and that is not necessarily a standard thing across the board, so it's a good question to ask as you're looking around at schools is what am I going to be able to do here Arts Wise.
Anything else Jessica specifically like me to talk about.
So curious Tom how have you seen your students balancing both worlds. You know like those high achieving students while they're in your music program like how have you seen students navigate that?
Well, the answer to your question is quite honestly, the very best musicians are often the very best students academically. I'm sure that's not a coincidence, and as far as balancing it goes music Theatre and dance, those are all very time intensive.
Disciplines there's no question about it, but the good news is is it doesn't necessarily feel like work the same way that writing a paper or digging a swimming pool or something might honestly for a lot of people. That's their outlet. An it's a big part of their identity and so even though it is time intensive. It's almost like a necessary step for justice being a cohesive and complete person.
But I will tell you, we have approximately in music. We have about 225 undergraduates and we have about 80 double majors theater. Also more than 1/3 of our students. We have about 125 undergraduates in theater dance. We have about 50 undergraduates and about 20 or 22 of them are doing some kind of double major, so it's rather common. It can take more time. It doesn't necessarily have to what that hinges on, honestly, is just how much you can take on as a student.
And not feel like a crazy person. Which is the most important thing we get. We get kind of set on why I gotta get done in four years. But the truth is, once you finish school no one pays any attention to how long it took you to get through what they're paying attention to is your grades or GPA and what you accomplished during that time. And so I would tell anyone just on any subject. Go at the pace that lets you be a healthy person. Am I achieving student even if that means you might be a little longer?
Yeah, I think that's really great advice as you were talking, I was kind of wondering. Is there a student story that you could share with us of, you know someone you worked with who is high achieving coming in and kind of what their journey looked like at CSU to give our participants an idea of what their experience will be?
Have there ever been any standout students that you've worked with.
Well, I mean there have been a lot. What's strange is for my position, there's a little bit of a gap in my visibility because I work with perspective students closely until they are enrolled and then at that point I see them in the hallways and I see their performances, but I'm I'm not in a great position to kind of know what their academic achievements were in the in the long run. I will say that we have a lot of students that have done interesting work.
We we offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in music in addition to our Bachelor music degrees, and this is the same for theater and the same is available for dance and that can combine, especially at an honors high achieving level. Their thesis with the work that they're doing in music, the Internet. So I have been to lecture recitals where students are combining kind of Interdisciplinary studies into a presentation that's fulfilling their thesis, like capstone registration.
And then in general, honestly, the high achieving students.
They tend to go on for additional training in grad school, either in their music degree, which may or may not be their first major, or they go on another in other disciplines. So I'm sorry that isn't a very specific answer to this question, but next time next time I'll be ready for that and I'll have a great.
I can't put you on the spot there, Tom, but I know you're sharp so I thought maybe it would be OK.
Well it is and I don't want to give the impression that there aren't. In fact, there's there's.
I would gather there's millions I just don't, I didn't.
I didn't frame it to know other than on paper how they look. You know how they look academically? Which is which is strong and?
Well, maybe I can even answer my own question there, because in maybe you know some of these students. So I work with the ambassadors and one of our ambassador coordinators is Jenna more and she is an honor student. She plays the flute and she's navigating both programs. Or you know both worlds quite well and she's also in addition to her academic responsibilities and everything she's doing with music. She is also an ambassador coordinator and I just I think she finds time to do those really important things in college. So she's.
You know, hitting her academics out of the park, but she's also taking time to be involved in developed her leadership skills. So I can answer that one, too. I should have probably shared that story, first, but again Tom I know you've been here longer than me. so I thought well maybe you have some good stories too.
well, that I appreciate the vote of confidence. I will tell the students who are listening. The nice thing about University is is that it is. It is dynamic. It's a dialable kind of commitment, and so you don't have to come in and burn the world down your first year trying to do everything. You can calibrate the amount of things that you're involved in and by the same token, if I encourage you, if you, if you have interest out of the gate to go ahead and pursue it, take classes, maybe sign up for two majors.
Knowing that, you can always drop one of those majors, or you can scale it down from a major to a minor. Or if you're in a minor, you can just take some classes in that area. That's one of the beauties of Lib. Arts in general is the kind of cohesive nature and how it all fits together, so don't don't feel like when you come that you'll be that you have to before you've ever set foot on campus. Decide your level of involvement and how busy you want to be.
You know Tom that's actually a very good point to emphasize with students because you made me think of my sister so she got. Her degree in English, but she is the funniest story. So when she started college, she said. I want to fly helicopters and so her advisor said. Well then you need to do engineering and so she did one year of engineering and she said. By the end of that one year, she said. I don't want to build them. I want to fly them in the advisor was like oh that's such an important distinction.
And so she said, well, I think actually English might be a really good fit for you because you love reading. You love the arts, you know you love her skill set really was in the arts. And so now she's flying. She's flying planes now, but can get training for helicopters. But I just think that's so important to know. Like you don't have to make it as hard as you might think coming out of the gate like give it some thought about what you want to do and then be a critical thinker around how to do that. I have another friend, he
flew, he flew. He was one of the jet escorts for Air Force One after 911 and it's it's crazy 911 is this week and he he had an English degree and he knew that he wanted to study English and he knew that he wanted to go into the Air Force afterwards and so I always love those stories of people who use the arts to navigate their careers.
By being good communicators and good speakers and good at writing resumes and things, but they have like something else that they want to do. Maybe it's like fly a jet or helicopter, or maybe something even more practical than that.
Well, you know there's a myth. There's a myth that this University is a transactional experience that you students come in. You give us money and then therefore we send you out, ready to be a forestry Ranger or an accountant or whatever thing you want to do. And the truth is, you know you're here to learn how to think and you're learning. You're here to learn how to synthesize information, and to some extent to make yourself an interesting person, so that when you go out into the world and into an interview that you seem like you have something to offer.
And you know, there the you know, there are so many jobs out there that are completely non specific as far as what kind of Education prepares you for that job and So what they're looking for in interviews are dynamic, intelligent people that they can trust with whatever it is that you know, whatever the responsibilities of that job are and I tell students all the time with the arts. Most of you will not get gigs in a professional orchestra like that's just very unlikely. There's 45 AM left in the country.
And so, but but that doesn't mean that you won't be prepared for any job that requires a college degree, plus you're going to have a specific skill that other people don't have to fall back on and so you shouldn't view it as a as a transactional exchange. If I study economics. I'll be able to go to Wall Street that may be true but it certainly doesn't limit you and when you look at Graduate School your undergraduate degree. You know if you're not looking at at an engineering discipline or something that's very science based design.
Is a lot less relevant? What they're looking for? Is synthesis of information and can you take that and then bring something new to the table?
Yeah, I think that's very well said. I want to take a second in. Does anybody have questions please go ahead and type in the chat again. They don't have to be exactly on what we're talking about right now. Maybe there's another direction that you'd like to go with this web and RI. Just want to make sure that we're answering your questions because I think Tom will say this to like.
Obviously we want you to choose CSU. Obviously we would love for you to be here, but at the end of the day we want you to find the best fit for you. And so this process is about giving you the information that you need as you're making your decision so this academic session, I can go back to my PowerPoint and that's you know, find it covers everything. But I also want to make sure this is tailored to one of you and the things that you're asking in having Tom. Here's just a great resource. He's how long have you been at CS Utah?
Well, this is my 10th year as an employee and I did 5 years here as a student.
Yeah, I thought that you had a wealth of knowledge. Anytime I've talked with you, You seem to know so much, so please take advantage of having him jump on this call while we're waiting. I'm going to go ahead and share.
Students can you hear Jessica I'm not able to hear her anymore right in the chat if you can hear what she's saying.
Tom Krebs II
11:34:42 AM
Can you hear Jessica? I can't hear her audio any longer . . .
Well, just in case I'm somehow hijacking it.
I will terminate my broadcast and hope that on my screen Jessica's frozen, so I'm sorry if I'm interrupting, but it was a pleasure with talking with you all today and if you have questions reach out to us. Would be glad to assist you owe. There's just she made it back in.
I'm sorry so technology is our friend but not friendly and so usually I remember to say at the beginning of a webinar that if I get logged out then I can just log back in. I don't know what happened there, but thank you Tom for filling in. Good thing you were here I think.
I told him knock knock joke.
Thank you for joining us today, Tom and to our students today. Feel free to reach out to him if you have questions. I'll share a few more things with you with the slide and then we will be done with the presentation. So thanks, Tom.

She’s cutting out
So a few things that you might want to know. I always think it's fun to have a personalized story of why someone's ended up where they're at in my path to CSU is that I was in California. I'd finished undergraduate studies and I got a job in Colorado and I remember like my first month here. I just was exploring the town and I went on Csus campus and I went here to the Oval type in the chat. If you've ever been to see a CS Oval, just yes or no.
Alex Hanson Hanson-Caldwell
11:36:36 AM
yes
Alex Hanson Hanson-Caldwell
11:36:46 AM
yes
It is the most beautiful place. I think it's my favorite place. Alex said yes. OK, so Alex, can you confirm that it's gorgeous? Like I'm not just making this up, it's really pretty.
Yeah, Alex says yes. It's beautiful Green Lawn with these beautiful trees that line the walkway that goes through it and students will just sit on this lonan read or study and do things like that and I just remember sitting down and looking around and thinking I would love to do my Masters here so I ended up teaching in the area for awhile and then I went back. Applied to their teaching Masters program and I earned my Masters.
In 2018 and then I came back and started my doctoral studies just this past year. So CSU has been my first choice for my graduate studies and maybe it would have even been my first choice if I had lived here in Colorado for my undergraduate studies. Many of my siblings have attended CSU and my sister is actually a ram handler. She handles Cam the Ram he's our mascot in this is.
Kind of little statue of Cam the rim, and so he is like this top secret place on campus where they keep actually think it's off campus and he comes to all of our football games and everything like that is a celebrity. My advice to you as you're starting to see what options you have available is just.
Start reaching out to as many people as possible in the areas that you're interested in studying, and please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions when it comes to the Honors Program, you're going to want to contact their Department. There's two people in the Honors Program if you want to talk with Diane is one of them. In Siobhan is the other one in both of them are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to what you need to do to participate in that honors program. If you want to apply to our.

So there's, for instance, a student who did the Harvard Public Policy leadership opportunity. Some students do semester at sea. You know there's other things that you can do. We have the student who interned in China and did some work over there. We have a Shakespeare in Oxford.
Program that we do usually each semester and then we have a zombie attack like a zombie. A trip that you can do. I think it's over spring break and then community based conservation work that you can do with in different countries. Those are some of the experiences that are honor students do. There's a honor Summer Institute as well, and then of course once you graduate you can participate in different capacities that Sinol M.
Linked here so you can just access it, so again, it's honors.
