Hi Paige
Haley Richards
03:58:17 PM
I am here
Hello hello I love you coming in.
I can't see your names yet, but I see the number taking up that you are here to span tastic.
Welcome Angelina, Ann Morgan and Shelby and Aiden.
We're just going to wait a couple of minutes to see if anybody jumps in before we really get going here.
And it looks like most of you are here in Colorado.
And I think we have one out of Stater.
Is that right? If you're, if you're out of state, share with us in the chat where you're from.
You can post it in the questions, for instance.
Throughout this presentation.
You can hear me and you can see me, but I cannot hear you and I cannot see you. So I wish I could see your lovely face is an that we could interact a bit more. But the goal is to make sure you can get some information that would be relevant for you here at CSU. So just FY I you have the opportunity to post questions.
And I want to make sure that you all feel very free to do that. You're welcome to post things right now so I can be sure to get your questions answered.
Throughout the next 30 minutes that we have together.
I'll give you a few minutes to think about what those questions would be and go ahead and post him.
Paige Jacobson
04:04:05 PM
They all can you hear me?
Paige Jacobson
04:04:51 PM
Please let me know if at any point in the presentation you can no longer here me.
Alright, I'm gonna go ahead and start talking.
So my name is police Jacobson and I am an academic advisor, academic success coordinator. Call ourselves at CSU and I work with undeclared students and have for quite a few years. And I actually started out my education at CSU as an underplayed student. So I'm excited to welcome you to this exploring majors presentation today helping get a sense of what's available at CS2.
How to find out what your options are and to ask any questions that you may have?
Alright, so for starters.
We have so many students who start their college experience at CSU undeclared. In fact, a whole third of our student body comes in undeclared and believe it or not, half of those students who come in with the declared major will change at some point in time. So not being sure what you want to do is a very common experience.
You are very welcome to come to CSU with a declared major or being undeclared.
Ann, you're not required to stick with anything, so if you wanna come in trying out a major, you're welcome to do so. And if you want to come in undeclared, you're welcome to do so. My understanding is that you all are perspective students that you have not necessarily applied yet to CSU.
So I'm going to throw another pull in here.
Haley Richards
04:06:50 PM
Hi everyone. I'm a colleague of Paige's and am having technical difficulty. I can't hear anything but am happy to answer questions in teh chat.
Haley is my colleague who also has worked with undeclared students for a number of years, and she just posted in the chat that she's having a hard time hearing anything but she would love to answer questions in the chat, so she will definitely be attending to any questions that you have an let's see who's here.
Paige Jacobson
04:07:36 PM
Answer the poll for us. Let's see who everybody is.
A senior OK, so really most of you if not all of you are seniors in high school trying to figure out where you want to be next.
I'm trying to figure out if my colleague Haley can actually jump in and say something, but I don't think she can hear us so.
We won't be able to hear her either.
Alright, so choosing a major if you come to Colorado State University or if you go elsewhere is a process of gathering information and being able to make the best fit decision that you have considering the information before you so that information needs to consist of information and knowledge about you as well as information and knowledge that you can gather about your options so we work.
Really heavily with students. Tord.
Haley Richards
04:09:05 PM
Congrats on getting to your senior year!
The practice of having students considered their interests, their skills and their values. What are you good at? What do you like are ready? What do you value in a potential major Internet career right? So that could be I'm concerned about environmental issues or I'm concerned about social justice. Or could there could be many things that you value or I really value at work life balance in my future. So we have a variety of resources that I'm going to be sharing with you that help you.
Consider learning more about yourself.
And it's also relevant to be asking people around you through this whole senior year, or people who know you well, what do you think I'm going to? What do you see me being interested in an what do you see me valuing that might make a difference? When I'm choosing a major or career, sometimes things are so close to us because we've lived it all. All of our lives that we don't actually realize that interest that we have or the skills that we have or the values that we have might not be shared with everyone and might actually be a little bit more unique.
So that is why we encourage you to consider.
Next, you obviously need to know what different universities have to offer, and one thing I want you all to know as seniors in high school going through this process of trying to figure out what comes next for you, is there a lot of fantastic schools out there we consider ourselves to be one of them and hope you choose us.
And it's also important to know that not every major is offered at every University.
An that is largely because, for instance, the state of Colorado doesn't want the state to have.
10 nursing programs and then flood our economy with nurses or 12 elementary education programs that can then fled our our state with teachers who aren't able to find jobs. So if you already have some ideas of what you might want to be doing is what you're looking for, you want to really make sure that you are evaluating if those options are available at the different schools you are considering.
Alright, so one thing I want to show you is that we have a general catalog that you can access to look at all of our different colleges and programs.
And be sure that what you're considering is actually here in available to you. I'm going to take a moment then to share my screen.
Alright, So what I've gone too is catalog colorstate.edu. You could actually look up Colorado State University and just type in catalog to our search bar and this would come up the general catalog. It's got all kinds of great information that you would find helpful. One of the main pieces that I think you would be looking for.
Is down on the left hand side.
We want to go to colleges and programs.
You click on colleges and programs.
You will get a listing of some universitywide instructional programs, but you will also see that we have a variety of different academic colleges.
And then in each academic college you will find a listing of a variety of majors.
Some have additional certificate programs that you can pick up that gives you a few classes that help at a specialization to your major or minor.
The major is the primary subject you are going to be setting the primary field that you are considering developing knowledge in potentially going into for akarere the minor is something that you can add on as a supplement.
A minor might require 21 and to put that in context, every student needs to accumulate 120 credits to graduate, so some students will pick up a minor and some students won't. That's not really something that you have to worry about or focus on going into college. It's something you can consider once you get there.
So we can pull up one of our majors and get a sense of what it's all about.
What potential careers might come with it and then what classes you would take for four years? So with construction management, for instance, we have an overview.
It's gonna tell us a little bit more about the major to educate you. If you don't know what the major in the field is about.
This one happens to have some entrance requirements that are above and beyond what the University requires students to do when they're coming in, so it shows you what those entrance requirements are.
It gives you some major learning outcomes, so if you could break it down into a few main categories of what you're really going to walk away with, that's what you get out of the learning outcomes here.
OK, potential occupations are listed as well and this is going to be for every major. It'll list potential occupations.
Now if we go to the top again, we can go to major completion map.
And this will show you what you would take each semester while you are here at Colorado State to earn a degree in construction management. So this can be a really helpful way of getting a sense of what a major is. Sometimes you can hear about a title that might be unfamiliar to you. For instance, I am going to go into another College of ours.
The Warner College of Natural Resources.
And I'm going to look up ecosystem science and sustainability.
This is a major that a lot of students are interested in. If they are interested in the health of the environment, so you really want to know what that would be all about if that were you will look at the major completion map and we Scroll down. We realized students take biology and they take Environmental Conservation. They take chemistry. They take calculus.
There is some more biology that we see. There's physics there statistics, so this major is actually fairly deeply based in science and math.
If you were to be interested in environmental issues, you might love science and math, but maybe you don't. So looking through this could be a great way to determine if it's the right fit for you or not. I happen to know that there is another major.
Very much related to environmental issues an it's in our sociology major.
If I Scroll down, I'm going to find it as a concentration under sociology, environmental sociology, this major. If we look at the major completion map.
Does not require the same degree of science and is going to be more focused on social issues.
To add to my point that there is really relevance in going through majors to determine what might be a good fit for you and what might not.
If I were to speak to you as an advisor, if you say page, I'm thinking of coming to Colorado State University, but I'm really not sure what it is I might want to major in.
I would say to you, take a look at what you might be interested in. Take a look at what you've heard about. Take a look at our catalog and come up with a good handful of possibilities that you're curious about. And then.
Let's talk, let's dig in a little bit more and let's figure out what might be fitting for you.
You all might have particular interests that have been developed based on experience, but there are other things you might really be interested in that you don't even know yet exist. So when you're going through that catalog, you might be surprised to find that.
There are major you've never heard about. For instance, I would ask you, do you know what rangeland ecology is? Have you ever heard of environmental, environmental horticulture? For instance, do you know what fisheries biology would be all about?
And my guess is you would say no to at least one of those. So going through that catalog, finding out what's there and then looking into what those are all about can help expand your options past your current knowledge base.
So if anybody has questions about any of that, please definitely share it out.
Nextismymajors.com, you might have a bit of fun with this. My majors is an opportunity for you to jump on line and take a quick little assessment that ties CSU majors to what you might be interested in an good at.
I'm gonna ask her to put the majors in the chats and she can give you that link.
Paige Jacobson
04:19:15 PM
Haley - will you add the mymajors link to the chat?
That's something that you can do, probably in 15 or 20 minutes and what it will do is. It'll ask a variety of questions and then the end give you 5 to 7 majors that exist at CSU. That might be a good fit for you. Once again, that is just CSU majors, so there could be majors at other schools that exist but wouldn't pop up.
For you here, because the majors are just yes you related.
there are some majors at CSU that are competitive that have entrance requirements beyond what CSU requires of you in general. So when you are applying to CSU's University.
The Admissions Office is looking at a combination of your GPA and test scores and a variety of other factors that would come up in an essay that you right when you apply for admission.
That combination test scores and GPA specifically may be able to launch you into certain majors that require.
Above and beyond what the University requires for admission in general.
So examples of those majors are listed here on my slide by Medical Sciences, Business Engineering, Computer Science, and journalism. So I have lots of students that I advised on a regular basis but are interested in engineering or interest in business. But maybe their GPA was just shy of where it needed to be or their test score in math was just shy where it needed to be.
Haley Richards
04:21:04 PM
CSUMyMajors.com is a great starting place for your major exploration. It links to majors CSU offers with more resources to explore. https://csu.mymajors.com/quiz/
And those students, and have the opportunity to make it into those majors once they're here at CSU. Through earning a certain GPA, anthru, taking certain classes and achieving certain grades in those classes. But that's one thing I want you to be aware of, because it exists at CSU. You can check it out on the admissions website and the search. Enter competitive majors, and you can gather a lot more information about that, OK?
Feel free also to add in questions to the chat if you're.
If you have them, if you have questions about those entrance requirements, if you've already been invented whatever the case may be.
What we would want you to do considering enrollment at Colorado State University?
And considering the process of exploring majors would be take the my majors quiz at csumymajors.com and feel free to jot that down or open another tab in your browser an pop it up right now.
Check out all of the different options in the catalog catalog.colostate.edu.
Another thing I want you to really come away understanding is that it is absolutely OK to declare a major in tested out even if you don't feel 100% sure about it. In fact, I would say that very few students who declare major feel 100% sure, and even those who do may end up changing anyway.
Once they get into it and get to experience it a little bit more. So there are a variety of majors that I would actually recommend trying out if you have some interest in it.
Those are especially our design oriented majors, art apparel and merchandising. Interior design. Taking your first semester.
As that major will give you the opportunity to take some classes that relate to that major and will give you the opportunity to move on if you love it and gradually with within a four year period, which would be our goal for you with some of those majors if you don't test them out early on, then that timeline to graduation can get a little bit messy, so reach out to advisors at Colorado State as well. Or two admissions if you have questions about what some of those majors would be.
But if you decided to declare apparel and merchandising for instance, and you take a semester, and then you decide that it's not for you, you've actually done a lot of good work in that. Exploring in that self knowledge process to realize, like, OK, give it a shot. And it's not the right fit.
Verse says doing that your sophomore year and realizing, oh man, actually I really do love it. I wish I would have tested it out first semester.
What kind of questions does that bring up for people that we could answer in the chat?
I'm also curious to know what majors you are considering. Would you be willing to post in our questions?
The major or two you might be thinking about.
Let's see I don't see any questions popping up in the chat.
Angelina Blanco
04:25:01 PM
I'm thinking about majoring in art
Morgan Hamilton
04:25:03 PM
I'm considering majoring in zoology.
Angelina, you are thinking about majoring in art. So the reason I would say it would be a good idea that starts at CSU with a major in art is you can dig into a couple of those art classes your first semester.
Get your hands dirty literally and see if that's a good fit for you or if it's not an. If it is fantastic, continue on. If it's not those art classes that you just tried out can become elective and go tored your 120 credits to graduate.
But see if somebody else who's considering majoring in zoology. Fantastic. So zoology is a constant major within our College of Natural Sciences, so you can take a look look more specifically more again through the catalog looking at programs and studies an looking at the College of Natural Sciences. We have a lot of students who.
Well, major specifically and zoology and then we have a lot of students that also have some interest in the animal side as well, so don't choose to major in biology but concentrate in zoology. The plant side as well so they'll choose to major in biology but concentrate in zoology and that's another option that you would have. But looking through the program and the required courses that you would take will really give you a sense of what that major is all about.
Anybody ask majors that you have questions about, or majors that you're considering?
Haley Richards
04:26:42 PM
@Angelina: Art is one of the majors that may make sense to declare so you can try some of the classes. Non-art majors only get access to art classes after all art majors register. This is because they are popular classes and many students want to take art classes for their free choice electives. An Undeclared advisor could help you decide if it makes sense to declare or to wait and try the available classes.
OK, Haley's responding Angelina to you as well.
Alright, I'm going to put another question in the pool.
Paige Jacobson
04:27:41 PM
Haley Richards
04:27:42 PM
@Morgan: Zoology, on the other hand, is one major that you can freely explore without having to be declared. Getting started with introductory biology, chemistry and math classes, as well as All University core curriculum classes like English Composition, History, and more will get you off on the right foot.
A few universities in mind. OK, beautiful and again. Although we'd love you to be here with us at color to State University, and we think it's a great place to be, we recognize that there are a lot of good options in Colorado, and so the more information you can gather about colors to University, which is what you're doing because you're here. And that's fantastic. And the more information you can gather about the other schools, the Greater your understanding will be as to.
Haley Richards
04:28:22 PM
There are so many great options out there. You're doing the right thing by attending info sessions, asking questions, and looking at all the options available. It's a lot to consider!
The offerings that are the best fit for you.
OK, any last questions? We're down to two minutes.
It doesn't look like it necessarily.
If you are have any additional specific questions, I would love to answer them for you.
